Wife’s Bosh dishwasher crapped out after 15 yrs, no Bosch is to be had. Went with a Thermador, pricey but relialability is what I wanted, old folks don’t like interupuptions in daily life. Pandemic responsible for part shortage, wife wanted a cheaper brand but when you add all the add ones, tax, installation, the cheaper one was 350$ less, told her get the thermdor.

Mine flooded the kitchen couple weeks back. 17YO GE. Found out the repair guy has COVID and when I phoned my friend at the local hdwe that dispatches him he laughed at me thinking about repairing such an old machine. Says now they are lasting 7-9 years. Replacement time I reckon. Meanwhile I relearn a prehistoric skill: dishwashing. Or, washing up, as our Brit friends call it. At least I feel like I am accomplishing something. Sorta.

2 houses ago we ordered a Frigidair dishwasher and they delivered and installed a Bosch. I looked at the dependability online and made them come back and put in the right one. They thought we were crazy. The Viking, and other premium priced appliances are notoriously undependable. My boss put in an all Viking kitchen and let's just say that it's a good thing that his wife didn't cook.

My 15 year old refrigerator went out.The repairman told me it couldn't be fixed because they no longer make the part. If they did have the part, the cost and repairs would be higher than buying a new one. The wife and I saw a GE side by side, water and ice in the door at the Sears outlet...way heavily discounted. The salesman told me that he could not get it to move as someone had put the handles on and mule it through the doorway. One handle was pretty bad, the other had a small scratch. I took the model info, went home and looked up the GE part for a handle...$200.00! It would still be a better deal than when new. I used my Google-Fu with the model and part number and a guy in Kansas had the handle for $30.00 on appliances that he parts out. Picked it up, and drove two screws. I saved about 1K on it.

We are a nation of replacers, not fixers.
We also make a lot of junk. (If we even MAKE it at all.)
My parents had a Frigidaire that lasted over 40 years.

we apparently lucky with our big appliances. Fridgidare set washer/dryer 12+ yrs & working good. Fridge around 15yrs, no issues. Back room freezer gotta be 25yrs, given to us by her main gal-pal when she went into hospice care, running well (do have to de-frost same, usually twice a year. Dishwasher? called MEEEE! Nan hasen't been able to bend over sink for at least 7yrs with all her physical problems. I don't mind doing all dishes, long as let 'em soak for awhile first.
Ed Duncan, Batavia, NY yeah, we dinosaurs, no dishwasher, do keep our landline as main phone

I have a Kitchen Aide dishwasher bought new in 2004. Has not been used since 2011. For many years, I did not have running hot water so a dishwasher was useless. I recall this one needs water at about 120 degrees (F). I have had hot water for the past few years, I never think to use it since there is just me and washing dishes by hand is about the only I get my hands clean after working! Mostly it stores the seldom used kitchen pots and pans.

Some years ago, our old electric range needed a switch. I looked in the phone book and found the words "From our family to yours" I called em, and the guy had the correct switch on the truck; the parts have gone way up lately, is what I was told. The guy left the part box on the stove and returned to the truck for a second toolbox; I took the part number down and looked it up on the computer...online price-$14.50...on the truck price-$125.00. " From our family to yours "

Many companies capitalise on this and purposely make things that only last a short time so they can get repeat business. It's a good business model, but it sucks for the consumers.

Expensive items fail, and if they are more than five years old you are apt to hear— “We don’t service that model anymore.” It’s part of the plan.

Wash all our dishes by hand with sponge and scrub brush for years. Recently bought a new Frigidaire refrigerator about a month and a half ago for only $550 brand new. It was dinged up and had a few barely noticeable scratches along the side and the fridge is black so they're really barely noticeable from a couple feet away. The fridge is recessed into a spot in the wall in the kitchen anyway so you cannot see this at all while in use. Saved nearly $400 by getting one dinged up, not a single problem with it mechanically or otherwise. Our old one was about 30+ years old. Still worked, we sold it really cheap to a couple that really needed a fridge for just a few months to get by. It's refrigerant was weakening and we told them that up front. They were still fine paying $80 for it and getting a few more months of use.

My refrigerator/ freezer works great, but the light went out in the freezer.
It is an LED light bar, that can be bought from the manufacturer, $65.00.
So we just turn the kitchen lights on.

I have an old Sears Coldspot refrigerator in the garage. You know the type. Coils in the rear, etc. Mostly used for ice, water, and beer. But it just keeps chugging along. Doesn't matter if it's 120 degrees in the garage or not. It was my mother's. Not sure exactly when she got it used. Sometime when I was in the Navy I think. She liked having multiple refrigerators.
