Sweet piece of history, Charlie! Amazing, isn't it? Not many things still operate after that much time. President Lincoln was still alive. www.onthisday.com/date/1864/may/16

SG Lakeland Dark in a MM Legend, ca. 2015. My last dog was still alive. It doesn’t have quite the same cachet as that meer. Glass of water soon and then ni-nights.

Herb ( Goldbrick ) has inspired me to smoke a bowl of Watch City's Old Black Magic (in a Peterson Cara 264). I believe I recommended it to Mark ( msokeefe) and he didn't like it, so it ended up on his doorstep. Waiting for a review. I find it a pleasant change of pace from my usual light English fare and dark Virginia flakes....

I have only been pipe smoking since September 2021, so my taste is not cultivated. When I smoked OBM, all I got was strong hits of vinegar. It must be my taste and body chemistry. Even when I smoke Va’s or Vapers, all I get is is overwhelming lemon taste. So far my favorites are Father Dempsey, Presbyterian, Boswells Northwoods and a new favorite, Wilkes Crystal Palace. I had ordered 4 ounces and loved Crystal Palace, so I just ordered a pound today. It seems English type blends are to my liking at this point. As far as aros are concerned, at work I will use featherweight pipes for Captain Black Royal, SWR Aromatic and Boswells Pennsylvania Dutch Treat.

I suppose that is what makes our hobby so entertaining. Tastes differ. I have smoked some very highly rated (according to Tobacco Reviews) tobaccos that I found horrible. I finally discovered that the best way (at least for me) to use that website, is to find someone who seems to enjoy the same tobaccos that I like, and use their ratings as a guide to explore other options, rather than depending on the collective wisdom of all the users and that "collective" rating. And my taste is not cultivated at all either. I just know what I like--not a clue as to why I like it.

I find it a pleasant change of pace from my usual light English fare and dark Virginia flakes.... An English smokers aromatic for me, some sweetness, that tastes fermented, and earthy, with some sour notes too, like a slight bit of vinegar, plus a taste of burnt chocolate, like the crusty edges of a pan of brownies. This might be what you get when you burn Latakia and caramel, because I don't really taste eighter one in the smoke, just creamy, stewed fruit and slightly burnt chocolate. The bag aroma is much the same with a mouth watering hint of vinegar that those of you old enough to recall McClelland Virginias will understand. The texture is mostly small broken chunks like feta cheese, that I rubbed out and let dry for fifteen minuets or so...my reward was a cool, creamy, relaxing smoke , with few relights, and ending in a powdery, light gray ash.

I do like Herb's review and agree with everything he said. I smoke it on occasion--just to get a bit of the aromatic touch.
