I've had good results using honey (with coconut charcoal) in the past. Recently I stumbled on an advocate for maple syrup.
Anyone tried this?

I like honey because it's thicker, but the sugar is going to carbonize regardless. Molasses should work well too. Most all pipe tobacco is cased with it anyway.

If you are going to be smoking Rum Twist then that should work fine.

Haven't tried this for seasoning a new pipe, but it works for estate pipes I've reamed that had a little charring in the bowl: I'll take pinch of some tobacco and leave it out till it gets bone dry and can crumble it into dust--but not too fine. I then mix it with just enough honey to make a fairly thick(ish) paste, and coat the bowl with it. In the case of char, I also make sure to pack it into the grooves. The Tobacco acts as a binder and keeps it all from running to the heel. I imagine it would work similarly with maple syrup, and I might give that a try myself next time.

I thought it was a lot of bother, and I ended up with honey all over my fingers. Then when I lit my pipe, I didn't particularly like the burnt honey flavor tainting my pipe tobacco. I gave it up as a bad job and resolved just to fill my pipe, and enjoy it.

I just smoke the pipe and I guess it's eventually "broken in".
