Finished my second pipe today. Italian briar w/hand-cut ebonite stem. Spent a lot of time filing and sanding this one; the shank and stem, in particular.

Thanks. There's some things I'd do differently, but it came out pretty well. Free handed shaping the shank and stem, so the stem's orientation is a little crooked, but not so much as to be a hinderance. I should probably have done another coat of stain too, since I can see a spot along one edge where the buffer wore it down so it's lighter than the rest of the pipe. I might actually sand off the wax and re-stain it.

Nicely done! Keep on going. Hoping for a little workshop time tomorrow. What are you working on? Working on another freehand. This one's gonna have a longer shank than my others. Drilled the block today. Gonna tweak the layout of the shape and get it to the saw.

Do you have a thread somewhere so I can see your work? I haven't had a lot of time to look through the whole site just yet. I'm not sure what my next one will be. Might make a paneled billiard, or maybe a zulu; haven't decided.

I like those rusticated shanks--dremel?

Thanks, and yes, a Dremel. My primary shaping tool, along with a couple rasps.

I haven't done much with a rotary tool yet. So far I've just use it to grind out a groove to start filing out the button, and cut the airway on the mouthpiece. But I might try some rustication on my next pipe. After I drill out the functional part of the pipe, I start the basic shape on the lathe, then switch to a hacksaw, rasps and sandpaper. For the brandog (thanks for that, Terrapin), everything but the top half of the bowl was done by hand. Although I partly shaped the stem with the top curve of a belt sander.

I haven't got a lathe, so I spend a LOT of time with my files and rotary tool.

I've found the lathe to be really helpful, but I'd say I spend at least as much time--probably more--at filing and sanding as I do turning.

Yup. That first photo is a situation I'm very familiar with. I've been using pre-made acrylic stems. I haven't made any from a blank.

I prefer ebonite to acrylic, and I didn't see any that I liked. I haven't found it to be difficult--just time consuming. The hardest part is drilling out the draft hole without burning it. The lathe helps for this, since I can get the speed down much lower than my table drill. I just work a little at a time and clear out the material frequently.

Very nice! Great touch leaving the plateau on the rim. Really like the overall flow. Something that I need to work on.

Very nice! Great touch leaving the plateau on the rim. Really like the overall flow. Something that I need to work on. I spent a couple of days at sanding on this one. Getting the stem and the shank shaped the way I wanted and flowing down to the button smoothly took some work. I also experimented with staining, though I'm not sure how much my effort was rewarded. I stained the whole pipe (minus the plateau) in black first, then sanded down and stained in dark brown; sanded and restained again, and stained the rim in dark brown. I'm pleased with the result, but as I say: not sure whether it's really apparent the work was worth the effort.

New pipe finished. Grecian briar w/hand-cut ebonite stem. Overall bigger than the others, with a one-inch diameter chamber. Looks like a nice wide bowl - I love it!

New pipe is coming along. Got everything shaped (more or less--might do a bit to the bottom of the bowl), and just need to decide what finish I wanna do. The grain is nicer than I initially thought it would be, and I can't bring myself to rusticate the whole thing--which was what I had planned on when I started. Might just do a ring of rustication around the top of the bowl, or maybe just the shank or shank/bottom of bowl. We'll see.
