Looks like you were going for an orific bit style. I like it!

New pipe is coming along. Got everything shaped (more or less--might do a bit to the bottom of the bowl), and just need to decide what finish I wanna do. The grain is nicer than I initially thought it would be, and I can't bring myself to rusticate the whole thing--which was what I had planned on when I started. Might just do a ring of rustication around the top of the bowl, or maybe just the shank or shank/bottom of bowl. We'll see. I like the grain, too. If the other side's like that, I might leave it smooth.

I'll probably leave it smooth. Just itching to use my new rustication tool

Homemade, I assume? I've read about guys making their nail rusticators. I've never used anything like that. Looks dangerous. I like it!

Steel pipe fitting, I believe 1/2 inch to 3/4, with 40 finishing nails JB Welded into it. I've tested it on some scrap pipes and it works great! Being so small, I can get a lot of control, and a good, close grip without it slipping.

I like 'em both. I actually enjoy rusticating. I can get so focused on the act, that it chases all other thoughts away for a little while. And it takes care of the sandpits and other flaws in the briar.

Yeah, I enjoyed the process of rusticating on that pipe. I was going to do the top of the bowl at first, but I liked that flaw along the edge and wanted to leave it obvious. It was also fun working around the ring around the shank and that flat spot in the heel. Next time I might try using some rotary bits instead of just the pack-o-nails tool I used.

That was done with your pack-o-nails? Can you take a close-up of the bowl?

Very nice. I've got to make a nail tool.

It worked great except where the shank meets the bowl. I had to get a little creative there. I'm going to make a second tool with longer and fewer nails so I can get into the junction more easily.
