Great, if you only use it that way once in awhile otherwise you know it'll take the temper out of the steel and it'll start cracking and break specially if you use it for its intended purpose a lot.
Yeah, yeah, leave it to a Texan to spoil it for everyone. And I'll let ya in on another secret...........I'm not even Texan, LOL!

been there, done that....have to get it nice and hot and scrub it with a wire brush to make sure you get all the gunk off before you slap some meat on it.

I was gonna say, it is a great idea so long as it's not a painted tail gate. Like exbenedict said so long as it's not painted and you brush it off in the fire. That would be convenient for a quick portable grill.
