Yesterday at a pipe club meeting one of the members new to the hobby had this to say:
Being somewhat new to the hobby, I joined another forum and eager to learn what I could, so I asked if anyone could provide links to places that they would recommend for me to look at. A forum member jumped on it quickly and berated me for being traitorous to the forum by asking such a question. "The advertisers deserve to be supported that provide the forum you are riding on...blah, blah, blah, blah, blah...of course offering no advice.
One of the pipe club members that is also on both forums private messaged him and said "pay no attention to that guy, that is just the way some are over here. Check out the patch, they don't engage in such nonsense."
The one new to the hobby remarked at the differences between the two and that there is no nonsense over here, everyone polices themselves, is respectful to others and truly wants to help others on the journey.
My observation is that at that other forum there have always been people at that forum that view themselves as having tenure, and newbies need to shut the hell up and just listen to the wise ones. "Use the search feature!" is an arrogant response, and rude behavior.
Sometimes new members ask a question and I will provide a link to the subject at hand without opining myself, because those that contributed the advice know more about it than I do, and say it so much better...and it is pointless for me to add to what they have to say.
It is nice to communicate with adults, and people that do not suffer from insecurity.
sparks and the mods along with the members make this a great place to call home.
The forum in question is currently the "big daddy", I just don't want to provide the name where some miscreant can post a cross link for their own foolish desires.

I know of the forum Charlie is talking about, my first question on that forum I got the starkest answer. Being vested in oiled field work it didn’t hurt my feelings but dampened my feeling for the place. Zip to now, I fund this place every month with a very modest contribution, I enjoy learning things from the more intelligent members, I have only encountered one troll who I ignore, actually feel sorry for the man, but some damn fine people here, I Garronte!
