Hi everyone,
I have lurked here more than a few times and thought it was time to jump in. I am in metro-Detroit in Michigan. I bought my first pipe and tobacco when I was rather young in 1982. I remember the pipe was a Dr. Grabow on the cardboard display in a party store that is no longer there, but I can't remember the tobacco for sure. It was either Holiday or Kentucky Club Mixture.
I didn't start regularly smoking a pipe until 1984 and in 1987 I switched to cigarettes. In 2011 I started smoking a pipe again (I had quit the cigs) and it has brought me so much enjoyment since. I love tobacco, all varieties and I have an extensive cellar that I rotate through depending on taste and mood. I'm smoking GH Whiskey Twist in a Pioneer Calabash as I type this.
The pipe/tobacconist presence used to be substantial in my area in the 1980's, but when I started back up, I found it was mostly gone and today almost entirely. Time marches on but it leaves me a bit melancholic that so much has changed. Many people on YT started making me feel less alone with this hobby and I was happy to see this site. It's nice to find a place where pipe smokers gather.
Ted

adding greets/welcome from 50miles East of Buffalo, NY. Really old-timer with various forums/chats since got 1st computer in '01. Very lo-tech as have some brain-damage from birth but able to function at that level somehow. No real friends, wifie passed on last Tues, having buncha online friends at the chatroom at night. All my "expand horizons", OTC baccies yrs ago, settled in on being a "lata-whore" for past 16yrs. 53 total pipes, all have lucite stem, no time to de-oxidize vulcanite, no tools, can't be bothered. I believe a regular fella "Silver" is from your area. Hope you find this a friendly place, only one real "rule", go light on politics/religion topics
Ed Duncan, Batavia, NY 81, still upright, pipe/cigar since ??62, guess which century

Welcome from Chicago!
I started my life with pipes in, I think, 1971 as a college student, and bought my first tobaccos (as well as papirosy and various exotic cigarettes) at an old-fashioned tobacconists' a few blocks from campus. I believe that college town still has a tobacconist, but not the same one or the same location. When I moved to Chicago in 1972, I found at least three good shops downtown, plus another in Evanston where I did my initial graduate studies. Now, of those four, only Iwan Ries is left. It's a rather melancholy absence many of us feel, I think.
