The other day I smoked 2 bowls - one was St. Bruno flake and the other Rich Dark Flake, which felt a little strange as I was packing it. I think there was some crystallisation on the flake. It didn't look like mould, so I smoked it anyway. It tasted grand.
However, after smoking those two bowls I broke out in hives. This has never happened before (I've had hives before, but not from pipe smoking). I thought about what I'd eaten previously (or drank). I normally get hives after drinking too much orange juice, but I hadn't had any that day, so I'm wondering if it was the pipe that did it.
Has this happened to anyone else?

I think that I had that happen on a smaller scale I had some tobacco that I wasn't sure if it had age crystals or mold. It didn't taste right so I dumped it, but I did have a reaction.

I had hives once in my life--after cleaning green mold off the side of the house. So I know for a fact that mold can cause hives. My doctor said to take Benadryl. I did--the hives went away.... I cast my vote with those who say toss the tobacco....

Paddy, how old is the tobacco? Crystals don't usually appear for some time. If it's relatively recently purchased and there s something that looks like crystals, it's more likely to be mold.

It sucks, but I'd rather toss it than take chances.
Good to know that mould can cause hives. Seems to fit the story. The tobacco is about 2-3 years old so I'm not sure if that's long enough for sugar crystals.
