Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'll try to get pipes 7 thru 10 in here shortly. Then I suppose I'll get to work on #11.

Thanks for sharing a bit of your process and progress. They're all very cool pipes. Somehow I think smoking one of those freehands would cramp my jaw, but I'm a #TeamSmallPipes girl. Keep it up and keep sharing. RDPipes has a chin rest pipe support for sale on eBay. 😊🤠 That was a special time in pipe smoking, but I'm good on that.

Let's see, where are we? Oh yeah, pipe #9. This was earmarked for my brother-in-law from the start. He texted me a screenshot of a pipe he was bidding on. Unfortunately, he didn't win. It was a nice Karl Erik oversized bent Dublin. I told him I'd try to come up with something close to it. (as close as a newbie can come, anyway) Smooth pipe, lots of surface area (lots of sanding), and something new - a horn accent at the end of the shank, by the stem. Sanding all the plateau off was a little scary, but yielded fair birds-eye. You can see the pencil-mark on the side of the bowl in the first picture. That was my sanding mark for the rim! This was a fun pipe to make. No major mishaps, learned something new, gained a little confidence.

Just one more to show you, for now. Pipe #10 is from a kit block (ended up ordering a couple, as backup to my solid briar blocks, just in case). I don't like the limitations of bent kit blocks, but I tried to do something that was closer to the shape charts with some deviation. Not sure if this qualifies as a bent Dublin or something else. The bowl is tapered, with a slightly domed rim. The shank is actually oval with a carved embellishment (I don't know why, it just happened. Almost was sanded off). The stem was actually the first thing I decided on. I just like the color. The whole pipe, with the exception of the rim and end of the shank was rusticated with a Dremel. I regret not having in-process photos for this one.

Oh, one more thing. If you've made it this far, thanks for looking.

Pete, I would put all of these pipes aesthetically up there with most of the factory pipes out there...the first thing that comes to mind with me is some of my Israeli briars, Shalom and Mastercraft?, great looking pipes that smoke well, and will never leave my stable.

Thanks, Charlie. Except for the pipes I made for gifts, these will always stay with me. Even if a few are reminders of my learning process.

Just a clarification...When I said factory pipes, I mean that in a complementary sense, these pipe lean stylistically to the ones that came from my Israeli herd.

Thanks for posting. Very interesting. I've thought about getting a block myself, but doubt I would make it a hobby. Once I turned out one that I was happy with, I'd probably be done.
Keep us up to date on future pipes.

Thanks, John. Not sure I have any special skills, except maybe for stubbornness. Maybe one more installment tonight. Stubbornness is one of the most valuable of skills.

Thanks, Mark. Wasn't sure how I'd like this one while I was working on it, but I'm pretty happy with it, too! Good sized chamber, without some of the bulk of the freehands.

what attachment did you use on the Dremel to do that rustication?

Initial shaping done. More filing to do to slim it up a little. Added some guidelines for scalloping that I'll be adding. It'll be more than just grooves when it's done.

Great looking pipes!
I’ve shaped one pipe from a pre-drilled kit. Primarily, I used a Dremel with a Flexible-shaft attachment and either a cutting bit or sanding drum. I found that hanging the Dremel tool and using the Flexi-shaft gave me much better control than holding the running motor in my hand.

That sounds like a great idea, John. The Dremel motor can feel a little clunky in hand.

Hidden sandpits. The pipemaker's bane. On the other hand the sandpit can just be a bit of the pipe giving its' own distinct flavor....cherish the sandpit. It is part of the special-ness of the pipe.
