Last week I ordered a Charles Towne Cobbler and a Merrick Poker. The Merrick was all chipped on the side because the threw it in a box with styrofoam peanuts. The stem was so loose the bowl barely stood up. I sent the Merrick back hopefully I will get a decent one. I ordered direct from Missouri Meerschaum, so the producer could make maximum profit. I guess it is better to order from a pipe dealer who wouldn’t have the nerve to send garbage? You would think you would get the best of the best buying direct.

The last few I have bought were from Aristocob. They were OK.

You followed the right course of action. I doubt that a warehouse worker in Washington Mo. is highly paid and shipped you a pipe that should not have gone out.
They will make it right… Phil Morgan is a good guy.

It really didn’t at for them to ship it back other than that. It would be cheaper to send a new one and tell me to throw it out. If I owned such a company, the best would be shipped out, even better than the ones sold through retailers.

I bought a Mark Twain pipe from a UK supplier and it was quite badly chipped. I sent Aristocob a wee private message on Instagram to see if this was normal and he sent a picture of the Mark Twain pipes that he had - all were chipped to the same extent.
I've never seen that kind of chipping on the Cobbler or the Country Gentleman though.
I hope you get your issue sorted quickly.

I know they have a disclaimer that they can be chipped.

Just so you're not setting your standards way too high, all Missouri Meerschaum cobs have chips and flaws in them. It's part of the allure, they are not $100 carved wood, they are plastered corn cobs. It's normal to get chipped up rims, pits in the sides, and loose stems. Once you smoked that pipe for 4-5 bowls it likely would have tightened up and once the cob starts to patina at 200 bowls, you'll forget the chips.

Disappointing.

I could have dealt with the chips. The real problem was that the stem was so loose, holding it in your mouth, the bowl would tip over.

Their notation states that the TOP of the bowl may be chipped

Chips ok, loose stem not ok. Chips add character and MM cobs are not Dunhill’s.

MM cobs are not Dunhill’s. That's a good thing, otherwise they'd be unsmokable.

They sent me a return label and a new pipe with a tight stem. All is good. I had a friend on another forum, that was pissed that 1-800 flowers delivered his wife some wilted crappy flowers. I told him that he should reach out to them. They responded by delivering two dozen roses in pristine condition and a box of chocolate covered long stem strawberries that were phenomenal. Another guy on a gun forum complained about a pistol he received. I suggested that he contact Smith and Wesson, and they fixed the problem with the feed ramp and did some extra work on the trigger, gave some swag with a couple extra magazines and such. Sometimes bad things happen in a company and products go out the door that should not. The companies appreciate being advised of the problem, especially in a digital world where bad news travel fast, positive news seems to be at a much slower pace by comparison. Glad they came through, but I am not surprised, few established companies want their customers to feel badly about a purchase.... I bet ther will be a meeting with the employees about that pipe leaving the barn.

I have 6 or 8 cobs from Missouri Meerschaum. The quality is a little hit and miss sometimes. The dents and dings are OK - it's a cob pipe so I don't expect a work of art - but a couple have the stem attached such that it enters the bowl at an angle - not straight in - if you know what I mean. I've thought about visiting their factory and taking a tour. And being able, hopefully, to buy pipes right there where I can see what I'm getting. But COVID has delayed that trip.

I rarely buy a cob, but when I do, I do it in person so I can inspect it before I buy it. If not from a local shop, then in person from MM at either the Chicago or Columbus Shows.

None of the Dunhills I've had would pass a pipe cleaner and four of them were straight. They were all repurposed or trashed.

I guess I have bought nearly 1/3rd of my Missouri Meerschaum cobs direct in person from them at pipe shows. I've got two cobs showing up from P&C today, a MacArthur and a 5th Mark Twain to be "cellared".

I picked up a couple MM Legends last weekend, with the flat (poker) bowl. I will be carving/rusticating/staining these babies at some point. Haven't made any "corndust" in a while.

I have four MMs I use to test new tobaccos. That's all I really use them for. As for Dunhill's, sorry you had such bad experiences, chasingembers. I have five and each one is a near perfect smoker.
