My son want's to scatter his mother's ashes in the ocean..In order to do so he has to charter a boat that will take him at least 3 miles out to sea.It cost 6 hundred dollars./Part of the clean air and water act.

Compared to anything related to final expense's $600.00 is a bargain but he could always find a quiet public beach or shoreline park at sunrise to say goodbye. RIP

I suppose it is still a cheaper alternative. What happens if he doesn't charter a boat and just scatters it at the shoreline? Is there a fine or prosecution if he gets caught?

That's my plan as well--to have my ashes scattered in the Gulf of Mexico (it is in my will). Since most of my family are boaters, that will not be a problem. However I suspect they will spend considerably more than $600 on beer and wine for my "goodbye party."
Seriously, it is comforting to me to know my remains will stay above ground and be part of the living and perpetually moving pulse of the planet. I trust that she, too, would prefer that to other options. May she rest in peace....

Some of mine will go back to Ireland. The rest will be mixed with those of my dogs from the last 30 years and be placed around the ranch and in our creek, which flows into the Platte, then the Missouri, then the Big Muddy, then the Gulf. Should be quite a trip.

Yeah, we have stupid people making laws that are not capable of running their own lives right. Cremated remains offer no harm to the sea...when I lived in California rotted sea lion carcasses were left to rot for natural burial on the beach till the tide took them out.

My mom wants me to scatter her ashes on the snake river when the time comes. We joke since it’s technically not allowed. I’m going to accidentally spill the urn while fishing.

When my uncle Dave passed, his buddies took his ashes out past the Golden Gate Bridge about one mile offshore. He was a big "yachtsman", crewed on many racing sailboats in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980, was the light of every party or gathering, member of the most important San Francisco Yacht Club- the St. Francis Yacht Club. His buddies all drank themselves into a state at the Club, then boarded A fine old racing Yawl and off they went. By the time they got offshore a mile or so they were beyond pickled, "Brined" was the term one old guy used. So, on deck at Sunset, words were spoken, Taps was played on a bugle, Dave was a USN Veteran of WWII. Then they uncovered the urn and heaved ho. Unfortunately, they tossed his ashes west towards the setting Sun and to windward. Dave promptly blew back into everyone's face, covered their clothes and the deck of the boat. After much coughing and exclaiming they washed down the deck with buckets of seawater. Dave run through the gunnels into the sea he loved. His pals dusted off but for years after there was a little bit of Dave still on each of them in the cracks and folds of skin. It seems they all got a kick out of that and drank his health for years at the Club bar.

For my Dad, I just chartered/hired a boat, went out & did it. My Mom wanted to "Swim with the Dolphins". I walked out off the shore where dolphins frequent, knee/waist deep & let her swim. Really didn't think about what our government wants.

My parents both donated their remains to the local university's medical school. That meant cremation after, as one might put it, their term of service. (They died within a year of each other.) They had plots and a headstone near other members of our family in the small cemetery near their house, so I made a visit there with my aunt, who lived nearby, and we quietly buried the ashes.
I haven't quite decided what I want done when my time comes; at 71, I should be giving it some serious thought. I wanted a Viking funeral on Lake Michigan, but somehow think the local authorities would frown on that.

I would like to dropped off on the Mesa and left for the coyotes, bears, ravens, magpies to finish off. A large meat cache here. That being unlikely, Hyrdomation is my next choice. It means being shipped to Washington State and being turned into liquid fertilizer. I could be shipped to Washington, D.C., placed in a chair in the Senate or House of Representatives and be equally useful as some of the lesser dead members of either house. bartonfuneral.com/hydromation/

I have family at sea, but they were retired USN. It's what they wanted, so off the cremains went to the Navy and we like to think they went somewhere nice.

It serves the same purpose, her soul is not in the ashes, it is just a memorium for the living. No sense in getting fleeced because stupid people make stupid rules.

My first wife wanted her remains cast into the ocean off the Florida coast and that's where they went.
