I swore off the Red Sox after they lost in a (6-run) 10th last night. Totally done. Then I broke down and watched them today. No run game until the 7th and the bullpen proceeded to drive them in to an 8-0 loss. The starting rotation are doing better than I expected, but without much offensive support, they’re just sunk when they get to the pen. Criminy. I'm done. Until tomorrow. Hey, prior to 2004, I had a lot of seasons like this. It really stinks because these players are better than what they're showing. Ohtani went scoreless through 7(?). He gets a lot of hype, but he's the real deal. Don't worry. The Red Sox will be playing the Tigers at some point.

Was reading earlier about how bad offenses are so far this year. Worst BA in the history of MLB, so far.

Sox already lost a series to the Orioles, so I don’t know if they'll do any better with Tigers.

I'm not a stats geek--plenty of other things I geek out on--but I'm curious enough to look into it a bit. For now I've been blaming it on the mushy balls. It seems they're making contact, but getting these bloopy pop outs. I'm not sure that's really the issue. I'll have to look deeper..

Great, thanks. I hadn't gotten around to doing a deep dive, but there's a lot there in that article. I'm wading through the drag study that's referenced. Baseball will never want for people who like numbers. I'll have to get back to you on what I think.
Early edition today for Mother's Day: White Sox 3 Red Sox 2. They're killing me.

Dodgers offense didn't exactly look like a juggernaut against the Cubs, but they made enough mistakes to give us a lot of free baserunners, and we took advantage of enough of them to sweep the series.
On to Pittsburgh.

Red Sox are struggling to get over .500. Granted, they don't have Kiké, Devers, Story, or Sale, and Pivetta, Eovaldi, Bogaerts, and Martinez have missed a significant part of the season. It's a AAA club playing in a tough division and it shows.
I really hate Yankees, so: Go Astros!

I know that I should hate them, but I can remember all the joy they gave her, bouncing out of her chair when they made a play or hit a home run. I have to settle for just being a little bit happy when they lose. Also, it was nice back then when people didn't hate so much.

While I always root for San Francisco, gotta say i root for two eastern teams: Red Sox, and Bills (though not baseball, I still like them). I just have a soft spot for Buffalo.

Walk a mile in queer shoes. It's just become OK to hate out loud again.

Whoever wasn't watching the last couple Astros games, please keep not watching this afternoon. It's working and Sox could really stand to sweep this series. As a thank you, please take long-time Sox catcher Christian Vasquez. He was coached by Jason Varitek, so he'll be an asset.

Haven't contributed much to the discussion this season. Haven't had time to watch much baseball. But my Dodgers are having a heck of a year. Hope it carries through the postseason.

Red Sox took the Yankees series over the weekend, which was a pleasant surprise. Tommy Pham and Eric Hosmer are great additions to the squad, especially with all the injuries. Sorry to see Vasquez got to Astros, but Reese McGuire should work out behind the plate. Not enough for this season, but that's baseball.
Chris Sale, who injured himself at the end of Tommy John rehab, finally returned to pitch two outs and break his finger on a comebacker....has fallen off his bike and broken his wrist.

For you baseball fans, currently on PBS is Ken Burns documentary on baseball. I don’t know if this is new, or something he did in the past. If it is done by Ken Burns, it is bound to be top rate viewing.

There're two Ken Burns docs, both older, that come up during pledge weeks. Both are worth a watch or rewatch. The second explores baseball in relation to wider American culture, iirc.

I always liked Tommy John. When I was a kid I listened to the White Sox on the radio if the Astros weren't playing. I have two programs where I scored Tommy John-pitched games: one as a Dodger against the Astros, and another as a Yankee at Fenway Park - nothing like riding the subway to Fenway for a Yankees game.

Apparently, Tommy John isn't happy that people refer to UCLR surgery by his name. It's not like he performs it! We used to do commuter rail to North Station or Blue Line to Government Center, then the D train on the Green Line to Kenmore Sq. It was far, far easier and cheaper than parking! They pack them in so tight that if you're first in, you're waiting a loooong time to be last out. I never saw Yankees at Fenway, unfortunately. It just never worked out. Sox have the night off to think about how bad they're doing. They've signed Kiké for another year and committed to keeping Xander Bogaerts, but I don’t blame him if he goes to another team that's willing to pay him. Same with Devers.

I'm a lifelong Astros fan (since ~1964), but lived within walking distance of the Mariners stadium for years. So it's a good year. But... I'm waiting for the Mariners to drop like a rock, losing the last wildcard spot to the Red Sox on the last day of the season.

I think the odds of the Sox taking that WC spot are nil, but hope springs eternal. And I'd definitely get behind the 'stros before the Yankees.

I wish Aaron Judge would just get the danged HR over with. Yankees Stadium has been going berserk. They're up against Red Sox again tonight and they are pitching to him, so it'll be soon. He is quite a hitter and seems like a good guy, so I only hate him a little for being a Yankees. I'd love to watch him get it, though. Roger Maris was before my time!
