Given that this is one of the iconic English blends, I always felt a little guilty that I'd never tried it. So I picked up a tin the other day at a brick n mortar I happened across.
The tin is dated Nov 2021, so it's pretty young. Tin description advertises latakia and Virginia. Based on what I'd heard over the years, I was expecting a light English like EMP or Squadron Leader.
And a light English it was... but very sweet, sweeter than expected... wait... what? Is that vanilla?
I swear it was vanilla. And not a light amount either. It even gave me some tongue bite, something I haven't experienced in years.
I remembered that there was a new version of Presbyterian that WAS supposed to be topped, and wondered if I'd bought that by mistake. But nope, my tin is just billed as Presbyterian Mixture, talks about being produced to the original recipe, and very definitely does not mention vanilla.
So, wth? Has anyone had a Presbyterian tin of similar date?

I've not smoked any of it in it's re-release reincarnation but it's purported to have vanilla casing. I hear it's similar to SG Perfection. I'd say "Welcome down the rabbit hole!" and that all tobaccos are cased with secretive recipes. Most won't list what they are cased with and only list top noting, if applicable. It can get a bit maddening when you expect no flavored casings for a blend and discover it throughout a smoke.

I smoke Presbyterian from time to time. I've never caught a Vanilla note, but maybe my tastebuds are dead.

Some of mine is about that same vintage. Haven't noticed any vanilla in it. That's just me, though.

Had to pull out a jar of Presbyterian and try it again, it's been a while. I get light English blend with additional sweetness, but no vanilla.

Seeing as I haven't smoked this reincarnation of Presbytarian, I'd also venture a guess that the casing could be a simple sugar playing with a quality small Oriental leaf. But I've been told before without buying it that it was a mildly sweet English and I typically avoid buying these if only available in tins. I suppose I'll give it a try eventually or trade for a few bowls of it or something.

Interesting, thanks guys. Trailboss, that's a good idea, to look to tobaccoreviews in situations like this.
I know almost all blends are cased, but this is different, it does seem more like a topping to me. The tongue bite is interesting too, since I remember back when I was smoking aromatics that it took a pretty goopy one to really bite me. But maybe I've just gotten more sensitive to it.
I'm going to dry it out and try again; it did come pretty wet. Of course this is all subjective so I can't say this for sure, but the way my tin is right now, I feel like if you guys could all dip in and try a bowl, it's hard to believe anyone wouldn't get vanilla. I mean it's pretty strong.
So... issues with consistency between batches? Or just different tastes? Who knows...

I'm not sure I'd notice vanilla in it if I was looking for it.
It appears to be no more - at least from its previous manufacturers. I think another manufacturer is making it now, which means it's unavailable in UK. I'm not happy about that.

I don’t have taste buds, so I cannot comment on the vanilla taste.. I also think it tastes sweet, but I love it.. I made a similar post a few weeks ago asking what tobacco is in it to make it taste so sweet.. I get a similar sweet taste from Father Dempsey’s.
