Watched them cut down a large tree in my neighbors yard this morning..It took about two and a half hours.I'm told that it cost $2500.That figures to a thousand dollars an hour. Not bad pay if you can stay busy.

There is job set up. Job clean up. Liability insurance is expensive. Other overhead and profit. Yes, profit, the point of being in a business as opposed to making one's own job.
Difficult and dangerous work.

Difficult and dangerous work. Damn straight!!..I've got a good friend that has been a tree man for over 35 yrs...back when there was no hydraulics to load and move tree trunks...ya did it with your back into it. He is a hard worker and even the hardest workers I have seen say it is too hard to be running with a chain saw to cut up what has been dropped. He has a crane as well as a bucket truck and a medium sized grapple-loader that is a monster...still he spends all day here cutting trees for me 'cause I just put a new roof on my shack and I can't afford to replace it when Hurricane X hits.

If the tree fell in the wrong direction it could cost a lot more than £2500.

I would easily charge $3000 for a two hour job with 5 guys, equipment, insurance, and clean-up. Wouldn't even break a sweat with that number or higher.

That sounds about right. I had one removed near the old place for about 1500 and that was 10 or more years ago. They even chipped the small stuff and left me a few yards of mulch.

We have a tree man who has become a friend over the years, having rid us of nine major oak trees. Last summer he took down two for $2200, and I felt lucky. This old boy{age 75} not only swings around on a rope with the young guys, he's a mechanic, and a welder, who can and has fixed or rebuilt every piece of heavy equipment he owns. He's a babysitter, trainer, and mentor for the six young men who work for him, and they love and respect him. Whenever his trucks pull into my yard, I know it's going to cost a good piece of change, but I'm always Smiling, and I know he 's worth every dime.

I am enjoying reading about the respectful way you are talking about the working guys with skill. I can only dump trees. I can not always fall them perfect. I do have a guy I know that does the tricky ones. He climbs and I work the ground. No fancy equipment and he is over 60 so only on his good days can he climb anymore. I have one more for him to help me with leaning over our pump house. He charges me the friend rate $40 to $50 an hour and I have to force him to take the money.

We had a Mexican family in Humble that became good friends. They didn't have the big equipment, but they were very smart about getting the big pieces moved. Up here we have another great Mexican guy and his son that seemingly can handle anything. They have a Bobcat loader for the big chunks.

I Los Angeles, I had just about a half acre lot with many large trees including a huge Walnut. It roots were in my sewer line so it was one happy tree. It required trimming every few years. For a couple of years I hired The Samoan Brothers. Four guys over 300 pounds each equipped with machetes. No chainsaws. They had that tree trimmed in no time and their finished work was surprisingly neat. . Large branches, big enough to support one of them. I once saw all four of them standing on different branches with their machetes. I wish there was a photo as it was a remarkable sight.

I'll stick with the nice and capable Mexican guys.

When we moved into our house in 2014, we had a 40 to 50 ft cottonwood that was dying in the backyard. Got a recommendation for a guy to remove it. Him and another guy came in. Threw a rope around the top, cut and pulled at the same time. Cleaned up and hauled it off. 500.00

I knew many Samoan immigrants in San Francisco. I worked with a bunch of them on a job. They were good guys for the most part. That is unless you were a Filipino Gang member, then there would be blood.

I went to a Samoan wedding at Chrissy field in SF, the grooms father was the head chef… with their body mass, the sure could handle the booze… they all had fifths as their goblet.
Doing foodservice, a manager of hometown buffet freaked out when a bus load of Samoans rolled in, suddenly an all you can eat restaurant was a loser.
Good people though, and always had a great time, but I was motivated to stay on their good side… they had the ability to de-limb me!

If the tree fell in the wrong direction it could cost a lot more than £2500. Definitely. A few years ago a tree fell on our house and punched through the roof and an interior wall. Then 2.5” (6.5cm) of rain came through the big hole in the roof. Two rooms totaled. $35K in damage repair and $10K+ to ServPro for cleanup and storage. Granted, insurance paid all of it but the months of living in a construction zone would make the tree trimming fee happily paid if we had only had advance warning. On the silver lining side, three days before, we had just signed with a contractor to do windows, roof, siding and add a front porch. When I told that to our very helpful insurance adjuster, he laughed and said that usually the tree hits the house just after the work is done. Kudos to State Farm Insurance. My agent was on site a little over an hour after I called her office. When she got back to her office, she immediately upgraded us to a catastrophic claim in the system. They were very responsive and helpful during the process including at one point the adjuster hand writing a check on the hood of his car and handing it to me.

We need to go in and meet our new agent in person some time. He took over the agency just as the pandemic hit.

I'm in the wrong business! Unless it's one that is in danger of falling on the house, I fell and render down ours by myself. There is something oddly therapeutic about chainsawing trees. I'm really looking forward to taking on some of our Maple trees this summer.

As kids, We grew up in a large forest. We heated our house with wood. I don't remember any details, but I woke up under a tree.

I am fortunate that I have a buddy that is an arborist, very fair pricing and his tree trimming is done on bulk trash week.
The city does the chipping and hauling.
