Hey from South Georgia. Come across some old pipes that my great-great-great-granddaddy used back in the mid 70s so let's just say I've had these pipes for nearly 50 years I've got some dunhills, kaywoodies, marxman, and a MC. Can anybody tell me which one would be the best one to use?

Welcome to the Patch from NE Texas! You can never tell how a pipe is going to smoke. An Italian basket pipe is likely to smoke better for you than the Dunhill. Just clean them all and start finding out what works for you.

Welcome from New Hampshire. I would try them all to see which is best, but would start off with whichever catches your eye the most.

Welcome from Chicago. That sounds like a fine inheritance, and I'll echo what others have said: Just clean 'em all up and enjoy. You can't go wrong.

Welcome aboard. I second the advice to start with whichever one appeals to you most. Assuming your ancestor took reasonable care of his pipes (and if he owned more than one at a time, he probably did), any pipe should work fine.
If there are clay pipes in his collection, I would steer clear of those at first. Too easy to burn yourself, and too easy to break.

A lot of the guys that smoked pipes back then were less than fastidious on cleaning their pipes and the ghosting and old gunk can make an otherwise great experience as a ho-hum or nasty one.
The advice to clean them well is spot on.
Ever clear is my choice of pipe cleaner, just try not to get it on the exterior parts of the pipe, if you do wipe it off… everclear can really dull the ebonite stem and the finish on the briar.
Buy a bunch of pipe cleaners, if there is a lot of carbon cake, it is best to remove much of it.
There are some great YouTube videos out there, or you can inquire at a tobacconist to see if they offer the service.
If you want to send them off or a full restoration, Mike Myers’s at Walker Pipe repair does great work.
Welcome from Arizona.

Welcome. Put ‘em all out on a table, close your eyes and pick one. Bob's correct, you might need to do some clean-up , but it sounds like you have a win/win kinda thing going on ...welcome to the Patch, from Virginia.

Welcome. One of my least expensive pipes happens to be my best smoker. It is a Lorenzetti Emperor Titus 37. I use it with a 9mm filter. I paid about 80.00 CDN for it.
