Saw a program on TV that talked about this being the end of the tank era. US may soon be introducing drone tanks, but for limited operations. Tanks cost 10-20x that of a Javelin anti tank missile. Tanks not a good investment anymore. World has changed.

There is an entire genre of movies made in Russia called "Tank Movies". These are Russian language dramatic films, not propaganda, about tanks and tankers in WWII. They are entertaining. Two I recommend are "T-34" and "White Tiger". It seems WWI movies and Tank Movies are to the Russians what Westerns are to Americans. Nostalgic.

Tanks not a good investment anymore. World has changed. Yes, true enough. But, nobody craps their pants when a guy walks into town carrying a Javelin Kit. On the other hand, nothing like a nice, large Soviet era T-72, T-80 or Russian T-84 to inspire terror. If you have seen them coming at you on the road or running across a field, you will be "impressed". Seen them on maneuvers in the old East Germany back in '81.

Since the subject was brought up, what is YOUR favorite tank model and why? Mine is the M-3 Grant/Lee of 1941. Not just because Bogie drove one in the movie "Sahara". Not just because it had a Wright Cyclone aircraft radial engine. Not because it carried two cannons and an M2 .50 in a turret. But because they were cool! Not a particularly effective tank but fun to look at.

Russian tanks against Nazi invaders represented Russian courage, resistance, macho. They produced them in vast quantities and lost them in the same numbers, but they stood as symbols Mother Russia and her resistance to evil. Now they seem to represent something else.

I read an article a few years back where Saddam Hussein sent out an armada of tanks.
We saw them advancing, dropped a bomb out of a plane that dropped hundreds of bomblets that all individually flew around, all picked up their target tank, and now the supposed battlefield was strewn with bodies and tanks. If I remember correctly, the bomblets sent depleted uranium rounds int the tanks, resulting in red spray.
No mechanized duty for me.

Given recent history, I think the least desirable job in the Army is Tank Commander.

Infantry up close have always been dangerous to tanks, especially since the Panzerfaust debuted in 43. Tanks belong in the open, where they can use their superior range. If they're entering a city or village, they need infantry support to clear out the enemy soldiers. The role of the tank hasn't changed with the advent of modern Panzerfausts; they've always been susceptible to close-in infantry, or aircraft. I don't think they've gone the way of the battleship yet. I have played a lot of WWII games since the seventies. Before I played the first one with my old buddy, we agreed to pick sides and only play that side from then on, so for all WWII board and computer games, I've always been the Germans. My favourite tank is an assault gun, the Sturmgeshütz. No turret, but good armor and gun, and they're cheap. Also come in a bunch of configurations. For a pure tank hunter, I like the Jagdpanzer - even better armor and gun, not as cheap.
