Zarnicky find that how you packing tobacco making big difference in taste and enjoyment of pipe. I using the Zarnicky method for packing pipe. Zarnicky developed method with husband Chuckles several years ago. (click link to see his photo) i.imgur.com/0YAI3vX.jpegZarnicky say "Chuckles, fill my pipe." If he does good job, I pat his head. He does very good job. That's why he's bald. The Method: The Zarnicky method uses a 3 finger pinch approach. If Chuckles do bad job, I pinch his arm with 3 fingers and twist. After several month of practice he doing wonderful job. Zarnicky method takes a bit of practice. I used to use slap method for packing pipe but Chuckles get too many bruises on left side of face. (Zarnicky right-handed). If you not married, try the Frank Method. What method you using? Happy Puffing, Anichka Zarnicky

I fold and stuff a flake, check the draw to make sure there is the right amount of resistance, then light it. I sometimes might have to add a little tobacco and sometimes I might have to put a pipe cleaner to the bottom of the bowl to create enough of an airway.

I guess I use the 1-finger method. I cram some in there, and poke it with 1 finger to see if it feels right. If it does, I light it.

Codger scoop or fold and stuff for flakes.

I break/rip into small pieces and fill a about 2-3mm depth at a time with a gentle tap with the end of a pencil (it's what I had on hand, but I find the pencil light and doesn't compress too much). I repeat this until the pipe is full. This seems to keep a good consistency throughout the bowl with no air pockets.

I generally pack it with tobacco.
I usually just cram it in, but for shags, I use (I think) the Frank method--tobacco in palm, pipe upside down.

My usual tamper/tool shown. I have two of these but wanting to be sure I always have a tamper handy I epoxied a 9mm and a 308 case together. I highly recommend that neither case has a live primer installed.

Ribbon, Rope (sliced and chopped)... I fill half way and jam my finger in there. Then fill it again and do the same. Then again and press it down with my thumb. I run a pipe cleaner in, twist it a few times, and I'm good to go.
Shag... cram it in there tight
Flakes, Sliced Plugs... fold 'em, twist 'em, stuff 'em.

I’ve been cube cutting my flakes lately, and get a really good consistent smoke. Gravity fill, with light pressure applied when filled. Otherwise, with ribbon, rubbed flake, shaved plug, shaved rope, I just pack it fairly loosely all the way up. Shag is packed more tightly.

When I'm distracted or in a hurry, neither of which is the best frame of mind in which to approach the pipe but alas! such are the times, I'm apt to use the codger scoop (stealing username's apt term) and just poke it down with my finger until it feels right. If I give myself the time and space for a more meditative start to the bowl, I use a method I learned nearly half a century ago, possibly from Carl Ehwa's The Book of Pipes & Tobacco: first third of the bowl dropped in and very lightly packed, second third packed with a slightly firmer touch, final third yet firmer but still springy. ("Third" being an approximatura at each stage; mathematicus non sum.)
Flakes are the exception to this. Flakes, with the exception of Mac Baren's Navy Flake, laugh at me from their seat atop a high wall while I flail about in despair and end up, nine attempts out of ten, with a small unsmokeable brick in the bowl of my pipe.

I scoop up the tobacco with my toes and shove it into the pipe. My toe nail fungus seems to enhance the tobacco flavor.
