Would like to learn about them from actual users.

I use IPVanish. Good all around usage.

Considering NordVPN or ExpressVPN. Any experience here?

I've used Express VPN, Bob. Seems to be a good one. Currently use Proton VPN, which isn't great, but it's free with my email service.

Went ahead and signed up for a VPN. So far I notice NO speed reduction.

No direct experience. Thought about it many times but never want for it. Did a lot of research and NordVPN stands as one of the best available.

I used Nord and Express and Private Internet Access. All seemed to give no speed issues. Not using any at the minute - they are a little pricey...but then again, prob better to pay a little than suffer a lot.

I used Nord for a year, just when traveling. Didn't renew because I will use cell service & wifi off with my cell phone. I don't use hotel wifi or any others. Nord worked well for me. I just felt if I watch what I do I don't need it.

I must be naive, but I was really shaken when I did some off-hand “research” on how open and transparent you are on the ‘net. I don’t deal in or consume “dicey stuff,” but I still wanted OUT of the anything-goes interweb cess-pool. I’m hoping that a VPN can make that happen. So far so good.

I used to use my phone hotspot when I traveled.

The free and easy first step is to use a browser designed to protect your privacy. I imagine you're already doing that. You might also want to read a bit about browser fingerprinting, even if you're using one of the above. If the browser you're using doesn't prevent it, there are extensions available, depending on what browser you use.
