Any of you guys smoke one? I had one in college, but sold it on eBay 20 years ago. I found a barely smoked one in my local antique store that was nearly identical. Got it for about 1/4 of what they go for now. Buffed out the oxidized stem tonight and treated it with Obsidian oil. Plan on smoking it tomorrow evening. Now to made a stand for it.

Nice find, Don. I've never owned or smoked one. I am curious about them. Not sure if I'm $150-200+ curious, though.

Hi Don, I bought my first gourd calabash, a Pioneer, new in 1984 and calabash pipes are my favorite pipes to smoke (and collect, I have about 40 of them) I have one going right now. Any questions I can answer?

I have a walnut calabash that smokes great! I got it unsmoked with a case for $20 from an offer up deal. I later got a gourd that had been smoked on the cheap…great smoker.

This is one pipe that I'm yet to own, but it would be one that I might add to my collection at some point.
For $40, you were right to snap it up, Don. Any pictures?

Any questions I can answer? I used to enjoy my first one, back in the early eighties and think this will be very familiar. I removed the bowl on this one and the inside of the gourd was extremely clean. I think this pipe may have only been smoked a few times. I never removed the bowl on my original, not even realizing you could. Anything to do to maintain the gourd itself? Meerschaum I understand, having a few all meer pipes too.

A gourd calabash in good shape at $40 is a great deal.

I've smmoked 'em. I have two, in fact; one larger than the other. I bought them back in the late '70s, I believe. They're enjoyable, until they start to go sour. Cleaning the gourd has been the rub. But nowadays what with Youtube, Google and all, I'm sure somebody has posted a method of cleaning a calabash.

I have never owned one. For the simple reason that I have never been attracted to the shape.

Pretty sure I paid $40 or $45 for mine 4 or 5 years ago. Found it in an antique shop. Despite being 30+ years old,it had never been smoked.
What it looked like when I found it...
Here's the after...
I smoke it every other month or so. I've dedicated it to Penzance. ;-)

Just couldn't make it work. Despite 20+ years of golfing with a cigar in my mouth the entire round. Can't imagine golfing with this beast hangin out my yap.

I've got my grandfather's Pioneer gourd calabash with the wooden stand, the same one Dino has photo'd here above. They are great smokers but I would also say that there's no good way to clean out the gourd.

I think that it was Brad that suggested lining the gourd with foil?

I think that it was Brad that suggested lining the gourd with foil? I've tried putting paper towels and cotton balls in mine. It helps quite a bit.

I never removed the bowl on my original, not even realizing you could. Anything to do to maintain the gourd itself? Meerschaum I understand, having a few all meer pipes too. From my experience, letting the gourd dry out after smoking for the day is the most important thing. When I'm done with the pipe for the day, I take out the bowl and pack a rolled up paper towels down into the gourd, let it sit and pull it out, the put the pipe on the stand with the bowl out until I am ready to use it again. Some people may have drastically different results than I do, but I find that simply keeping the gourd dry when not in use negates any lingering tobacco or undesirable flavors. I occasionally wax the outside of the gourd, maybe every six or eight months. I have one that I have smoked daily for about eight or nine years and I have never done more than what I described to maintain the gourd and it smoke perfect every time.

Thanks for the advice T-Cat. When I owned my first one, I never removed the bowl. I didn’t know they were removable until after I had sold it.

I have an unsmoked gourd calabash on my shelf. I have always loved the look and shape of them. It is odd, but I have always thought of the gourd calabash as a pipe to smoke indoors. As I only smoke outside of the house, I have never picked it up to take with me. I might have to remedy that sometime.

I love my two calabashes…and they do not be relegated to indoors smoking, a great porch pipe to meditate with as you sort out the events of the day, old Chap!

Last night I used a paper towel under the bowl in my calabash. I sometimes use cotton balls but either works. Good smoke and keeps the gourd from getting so nasty.
