The wife's Birthday, mother's day, and our 40th anniversary all took place within a month or so, and she has been recognized by me. Since women typically buy nothing for men other than trinkets, I think the guilt set in.
"What do you want for all you have done, she asked.
Heirloom precision was my answer, there are tons of great gunsmiths in the are that I live, and Jason is really at the top of his game.
While I have a Mil spec PW9701LP double stack (13+1)1911 A-1 that I am hoping he will take on.
I rarely carry, because I am more proficient with other handguns, put this one in the hands of the master at heirloom, I know it will make a difference. I have so many friends that got their guns back and said wow! Jason is a 1911 wizard...
As you may have noticed, my model is not in the list of preferred models, but it is a gun my son gifted me before his deployment to Afghanistan, and it will be his gun some day. We have the same name, so hoping Jason accepts the request and can do something special.
If not, I will get a nice Colt and have him do his majic.

When choosing a base pistol it’s important to choose a gun that doesn’t already have “factory added” features such as a beavertail grip safety, front strap checkering/serrations, high-visibility dovetailed sights, etc. In most instances un-doing these existing features (if at all possible) will cost more time and labor that it’s worth. Additionally, pistols that have had previous work/modifications done to them are not suitable for a custom build from my shop. Simply put, it is much easier and better for both the customer and the end result of the build to start with a ‘blank canvas’…. it’s hard to paint a truly great picture over someone else’s work.
My top recommendations for a “blank canvas” base gun chambered in 45ACP are as follows:
Colt Series 70 Government Model (SKU: O1970A1CS & O1070A1CS)
Colt Series 80 Government Model (SKU: O1991 & O1091)
Springfield Armory Mil-Spec (SKU: PB9108LP & PB9151LP)
Colt Series 80 Commander Models (SKU: O4691 & O4091U)
With all that said, I have found that depending on the scope of the build and the specific desires of the customer there are times when one specific brand/model of base gun may be better suited for a project than others. As such I’m always happy to make recommendations and give a bit of guidance when it comes to choosing the right base gun for your project.
