It’s been a long time since I read a 320+ page novel in a single sitting. But this morning I made the “mistake” of opening this one and the rest is history, as they say. It is told by a dog. Sounds hokey, but believe me, it is not. It will tear out your heart, but then put it back— all better.

They made a great movie from it.

I’ll look into that, but have a basic aversion to talking dog and talking baby movies. Not sure how a film could adequately convey the book. Thanks for the reference though.

I raced in the rain in, I think, Goteberg (sp) Sweden in summer '61. Small field of 120, only full marathon I ever won. Only Yank, was 19, Actually pleasant, rain cooled things down. At the time, 2hrs, 25 min considered excellent time. Tagged along for just over 20miles, got bored, took off & finished a good 7mins ahead of next guy. Never seen talking baby or dog in a movie, then there was Mr Ed, the talking horse. 'Nuff said. I've been called a horse's arse by better folks than anybody on this thread!

This book is amazing. And also about the saddest thing I've ever read (well, as fiction, disregarding the news lately). It does end in an uplifting way - but still. Never saw the movie for this reason.
Stein is a great writer though.
