I mentioned that this one was coming in the WITM thread. I know there is nothing special in how they smoke (just an excuse to buy another pipe), but I have been keeping my eye out for a nice looking birth year Peterson. I came across this clean 1974 Rusticated African block meerschaum for a good price, and decided to go for it. It is close in size to my 312 spigot pipe, but with a slightly longer stem and flatter transition at the bottom. I'm still deciding what to smoke in it first.
I'll try to get better pics later, but here is a quick one on the porch:

Nice find. I like that stem.

Nice...I never thought of looking for a birth year Peterson - more in my price range than a birth year Dunhill.

Thank you, This one came to $109 shipped. A little harder to track down, but definitely ore affordable than a Dunhill.

I have a Peterson African meer that I got from the Fred Bass estate. Doesn't smoke that great, but I don't typically care for meers.

Nice find! A pipe for my birth year would be hard to find; I just let my Stone Age freehand stand in for that in a general way. But I do have a Peterson from 1989, the birth year of my middle daughter. As I've mentioned elsewhere, out of all my children she is the one who has been most interested in my pipes, so that is fitting.

Nice looking pipe. That looks close to their 408 shape. One of my favorites from Peterson. Sorry that it doesn't smoke well.

I don't really care for any merr pipe, this is very similar in smoking qualities to my other African meer, a Manx.

Understood. They aren't for everyone. I tend to smoke mine more in the winter, when temps are lower and winds can be a bit higher. They seem to handle those conditions better than my briars and cobs.

It seems like about 20% of smokers like Meershaum pipes. I have about 8 I think, but I use them for show. The African meers are noticeably less absorbent and heavier than the white meers. I don't think that they change color as much either. I think they smoke a bit more like a morta pipe.

That's the reason why they stained them the way they did.

My real problem with Meershaum pipes is that they turn brown if you smoke them too much. It offends my sensibilities.

I tried Morta, Meerschaum and Cobs, besides briar. I can't smoke any other material than briar. I never did try olive wood or strawberry wood, and I suspect the result would be the same as the other briar alternatives I tried.

Very nice. I fall in that 1939-68 'no hallmark' era.
I found out by accident that these heavy African meer Petersons are really good smokers. I picked up a 1976 shape 305 that I intended to refurbish and sell, but discovered that the entire face had come off and been re-glued in place. I couldn't sell it, so I smoked it. It's weirdly heavy, but a great smoker.
