Captain Black Royal in the Pioneer Meershaum lined billiard. Iced tea on the side. I got this pipe out of curiosity. It's really well made with nice drilling and a very nice stem. But I'm finding the same problem I have with any Meershaum pipe. The taste is very flat. It might not make much difference with Virginias but it sucks the flavor out of burleys, English and aro blends. I get this from all Meershaum pipes. Anyone else? It might be that I've never smoked a meer enough to get it broken in.

Have you heard about that one being discontinued? I haven’t heard anything about that. I do have four pounds of slices though. Ernie has a replacement blend for it coming in August.

Ernie has a replacement blend for it coming in August. Thanks for the info. I’m glad I stocked up earlier, Slices are one of my most smoked blends. I am also looking forward to trying his replacement. Here's the full write up. "Due to a change in the quality of the Burley used in Watch City Slices, we were forced to choose between drastically changing the blend or retiring it and formulating a replacement. "Different is not the same" has always been my motto. We are putting the finishing touches on a worthy replacement which we call "Waltham Broken Cake"- A blend that is decidedly darker and richer than WCS but just as smooth. Look for Waltham Broken Cake by end of August."

It might be that I've never smoked a meer enough to get it broken in. I often see people parroting that meers don’t need to be broken in and in some ways that may be kinda true, but after smoking them for a long time I can definitely say they smoke to their full potential only after quite a bit of use. I’m generally happiest with a new one after maybe 30-40 bowls, but even then it’s a different smoke than briar or cob for sure. When I have a taste for milder aro’s I usually grab a cob if I want more topping to come through.

Super Value Black and Gold in my favorite calabash. I was feeling nostalgic and I used to smoke this back in the early 80’s. Keeping with the nostalgic theme I am playing some records from then and I picked up a fifth of Kessler’s and a bottle of Coke which is also bringing back memories.
