I am re-reading 1984. Something popped out at me. Winston says that the pipe tobacco ration is only 100 grams per week. This sounded like a reasonable amount to me, but I wasn't sure exactly how much I go through. Like most of us, I keep several tobaccos in rotation, so it's hard to judge exactly how much I smoke. I took a 50 gram tin (for this experiment I chose Royal Yacht) and smoked nothing but it until it ran out. I started with the first bowl on Wednesday morning, and I just smoked the last of it on Saturday evening. So, 50 grams lasts me four days. 100 grams for a week would be about right. I consider myself to be a moderate smoker. Most days I have five bowls, sometimes that creeps up to six. I did a little research, and apparently, in World War I, American soldiers were issued cigarettes, but British soldiers were issued pipe tobacco at a rate of two ounces per day. To go through two ounces in a day (that would be 56 grams) you would have to do nothing but smoke. I ask those of you who've been around a while: did people used to smoke a lot more than they do now?

Tobacco might not have had much shelf pocket life in those wet trenches.

Most pipe smokers would smoke all day long throughout everything they did like a cigarette smoker. Only in the past twenty years has pipe smoking morphed into a "hobby."

If I had it my way, I'd have a pipe lit as long as my eyes were open.

Two ounces of tobacco a day, and wet matches, would be my luck.

That's a crazy amount. I'd make a LOT of friends if that was the case.

I really don't smoke more than one bowl per day, sometimes skipping. Except on days, however, when Ted comes over for a smoking holiday.

In the updated 1984 version (21st century) coming to a real-life theatre near you, the tobacco ration will be: нуль (zero). As for back then, considering people could smoke about everywhere, including work, one had many more opportunities to light up every day. However, 2oz would be a lot to smoke in one day.

I think the British Army figured that a generous ration was money well spent as against idle, bored soldiers.

Pre-1980's, most of the "pipe tobacco" was also cigarette tobacco and they likely were also given rolling papers and smoked cigarettes out of it as well. Would go very quickly smoking 15-20 cigarettes a day.

Let's not forget nicotine's many benefits against anxiety, depression, etc. The tobacco distributed was very helpful for soldiers to be able to cope with the incredible stress they were subjected to.

I smoke around 10-12 pounds a year and built my cellar so I can continue this pace for over 20 years.

That's just too perfect. As i'm sure you're aware, a major theme in 1984 is re-writing the past so it can be more in line with Party doctrine. Eliminating tobacco from a book published in the 1940s just because tobacco is unpopular today fits right in there.

I smoke 2-3 bowls a day on average. 100 grams converts to about 3.5 ounces, which would last me near a fortnight. Like Legend Lover I'd have plenty of pipe-smoking friends if 100g/week was my ration. OTOH, if it was primarily Burley-based blends I'd probably give up the pipe altogether. I still can't bring myself to like the stuff.

When I worked as a diesel mechanic back in the 70’s and 80’s I would smoke a pipe all day as I did my work. My consumption was a 14oz can of Borkum Riff Whiskey or Original every 4 to 6 weeks... Now not so much, maybe 50 to 75 grams a week...

My Dad went through a tub of Borkum Riff, Amphora, or CBW seemingly every week. I'm not in that league, partly because pipes aren't welcome indoors and partly because I snuff.

Christopher Morley: This is the schedule I vouch for: After breakfast: 2 pipes At luncheon: 2 pipes Before dinner: 2 pipes Between dinner and bed: 10 to 12 pipes (Cigars and cigarettes as occasion may require.) From his essay Shandygaff which is here www.online-literature.com/morley/shandygaff/18/

Walt Disney was a chain smoker and was known to always have a cigarette in his hand, yet in nearly all photos of him, the cigarettes have been removed. It accounts for the somewhat odd poses his hands are in. In 2007, Disney banned all smoking in their movies. When they produced Saving Mr. Banks, Walt Disney was depicted as a non-smoker.
