I’ve been getting too many bad draws lately: light, airy, flimsy, unsatisfying. I ascribe them to poor bowl building, perhaps tamping pinches that are too large. I’ve started using much smaller pinches and being careful to tamp lightly but progressively more firmly as I build the bowl toward the top. This seems to be helping me to get more pleasant, full but light draws. Looks like I may need to go back to basics and start over…

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Has this happened with your Petersons? Is your tobacco more on the dry side, than moist, when you pack them?

I use the 3 step fill system. After I will it a couple of times, I the check the draw each time before I light up. sometimes I need to add more tobacco, other times I will n have to run a pipe filter into the bottom of the bowl to loosen things up. I am always looking a bit of resistance as any bowl that is too loose, smokes hot and looses flavor for me.
Filling your pipe properly is a big deal.

This happens to me occasionally too. It's like the yips, the more you think about it the worse it gets. Wishing you a quick recovery.

I suspect it's not as easy to fill up a pipe properly when one is dealing with such a big chamber as a Pub pipe, though.

I’ve reduced my pinch size. Now takes about 10 pinches, and careful tamps, to fill a House or a Pub.
