Just added this to the stable. Ruger Ranch in 5.56 NATO. Tiny. Even with a Leupold Patrol ‘scope in a beefy mount, 16” heavy barrel, and loaded 10-round magazine it still weighs only 6.8 pounds. I intend to use it as a gun-of-all-work on the place. Got it sighted in yesterday with mil-issue and will develop heavy-bullet loads for deer. As if I really needed yet another deer rifle…

Nobody would ever call the Ruger American line “elegant.” But they are sturdy, accurate rifles that perform well under all conditions. I have three of them now and so far they are all tack-drivers. (308, 6.5 Grendel, 5.56 NATO)

Should come in handy for all varmints like Tax Assessors, for example.

Handy looking rifle. Since you mentioned it, what are your thoughts on 6.5 Grendel?

Urb, I like the Grendel. I have taken deer with it and a LOT of steel gongs! It is accurate (very) and easy-going on the shoulder. I put a brake on mine to tame it down even more. It doesn’t need it but I don’t like recoil and do everything I can to mitigate it. (Just ordered a brake for that new Ranch Rifle in 5.56.) The accuracy of the Grendel is what makes it fun. I have handloads loads that will go just a wee bit over 1” at 200Y. The Grendel is hard to beat if you want a rifle that’s at home at the range and the deer blind. I’m hoping for a similar role for the 5.56, and with the almost infinite multitude of bullets for it (it’s 1:8) I will never run out of experiments or excuses to hang out in the reloading shop!

Thanks, Bob. Since you load your own, you probably don't have much feel for what factory ammo availability is like, although you might be having trouble getting bullets, given the popularity of 6.5's these days. I'm guessing the factory stuff is pretty scarce. A lot of things are, still (including 6.5 Swede).
Anyway, nice rifle! I'm sure you'll enjoy working up loads for it.

That is a great little carbine. I have the Ruger American Ranch in 7.62x39. It is my truck gun when I am out in the desert. Handy little rifle that takes Mini Thirty mags. As far as 6.5 Grendel, it us one of my favorite cartridges. I have a Howa 1500 chambered in that cartridge. It shoots sub one inch, five shot groups consistently at 100 yards, with factory ammo. I can squeeze a bit more accuracy out of it with my own reloads.

I replaced the bottom metal on my Howa due to that crazy mag lock. I agree: it’s a very accurate little rifle.
