Sad news, indeed. Three generations knew Vin as the voice of the Dodgers, and almost an extra father or grandfather. Nobody ever has or ever will call a game like Vin did.

He was a household name, even in New England when I was growing up.

The bond he had with Angelenos was remarkable. I say that as an outsider. I’m a Dodgers fan, but I didn’t get to grow up listening to him the way the local audience did. (The radio voice I grew up hearing was Jack Buck.) I’ve seen a lot of posts from Dodgers fans about how Vin’s voice comforted them after the loss of their father. How as young immigrants newly arrived in LA they learned to speak English from him. I’m not sure there’s ever been anyone who held Angelenos together and gave them a sense of identity as much as Vin Scully did.

RIP, Vin. One of the greats whose voice was the sound of summer.
