I've not caught a hockey topic here on the patch, so thought I'd offer it up. We've been in SC since 2007, but not a Canes fan since I was born and raised in / near Detroit...so we're Wing nuts. Who are your teams, and what are your thoughts about recent RFA's, trades, and the coming season? Can't come soon enough for my boy and me.

Hey, Joe. Lived in the Detroit area my whole life. Looking forward to hockey season, here. I think the Wings will make large strides towards competitiveness and respectability this year. Making the playoffs in the toughest division in the league may not be realistic, just yet.

Pete, I would agree; we've got a young and very talented core...and with the free agent depth we just added, I see us perhaps landing in a wildcard spot. Our year is definitely coming, and soon. For those who understand the Lightning rebuild, they know that the same mastermind is at work here. And yep...this is by far the toughest division.

Yup, the free agents and maybe a couple rookiesthat might push for a roster spot will make for an entertaining season. If Steve could have landed Matthew Tkachuk...

BTW, I think it'll just be you, me and terrapinflyer contributing to this thread, probably (and the occasional heckler, haha). Watch out for her, she's a Bruins fan.

Yep, hockey fans are sparse around here. I don't know how the Bs are going to look, but I'll need something to take the sting out of this year's Red Sox season.

I was not in favor of going for Tkachuk. If we were on the cusp of a cup run now, I'd say yes. Would I have hated it if Stevie brought him here? Nope...LOL.

I don't think your Bruins will win Stanley, but I still think they'll score a spot in the post season.

I could not stand him...meaning...didn't like playing against him...then I celebrated when he came here and did his thing wearing the winged wheel.

One thing I can appreciate about hockey athletes, is that sport seems to never seem to have been politicized as other major sports have.

One thing I can appreciate about hockey athletes, is that sport seems to never seem to have been politicized as other major sports have. That's true, Charlie. The mutual respect of nearly every player shines through in interviews and public statements with little departure, and it's rare to see a player or team bowing down to the divisive political issues of the day. Are you bravely admitting that you like hockey a l'il bit?

Bruins signed Patrice Bergeron for another year, and David Krecji will be back. I'm still not really looking at hockey yet, but i just noticed this in the newspaper.

They also snagged Zacha from free agency. The Bruins will at least be a post-season contender this year. Both Bergeron and Krejci were 1 year deals...so who knows what your squad looks like next year. I wish them well...yesss, even the rat.

Avs fan since their first season here. Twas a good season. No doubt you well remember the bitter rivalry between your Avs and our Wings. It went on for decades. Yet here I was...very strongly pulling for your Avs to beat the stinking Lightning for the cup...and I'm thrilled you did. That 7-0 shellaccing was just marvelous. You'd have beaten them even worse if some of those refs didn't have jerseys with stripes & bolts on them! The Lightning get away with more than most teams when it comes to calls & non-calls. And Cooper going public with his nonsense about Kadri's game winner...I lost some respect for him on that...especially after his own team was NOT caught with I believe 7 men on the ice during that same series...and his own team also defeating the Islanders a year or 2 ago in the post season with his team having too-many-men during their game winner. The irony. But that was last season...onward we go! Congrats on the cup, Don. My boy and I have a high opinion of Kadri...he's a beast!

I don't know if they'll have the Perfection Line together or drop Pastrnak down to the second line again. Either way, they have lots of talent.

Bergeron/Krejci really does strengthen the B's chances. Darn it! Regarding the Avalanche, I'm from Detroit, so... Oh, I get it. I was born in Receiving Hospital downtown and lived near Detroit for 44 years, so I bleed the winged wheel. I'll qualify my rooting for the Avs.....in that they were playing the stinkin' Lightning...who needed to lose for multiple reasons. Did you ever read the account about McCarty and Lemieux facing each other some years later on the ice..and the brief convo they had? It happened after McCarty had gotten some help with alcohol abuse. If not, here's a segment of the article: During the 2002-03 season, as Lemieux was playing for the Dallas Stars, he skated over to McCarty, who thought another fight would go down.
âWhat the f*** do you want?â McCarty asked...âYou looking to go again?â What Lemieux said shocked him.
âNo, I just wanted to say - Iâm happy for you that youâre doing better in your lifeâ.

To set the record straight - I have a great deal of respect and admiration for the work Joe Sakic has done with the Avs organization, both as a player and executive. He led one of the quickest rebuilds in recent history. I also think the Wings/Avs rivalry was one the the most intense, bloody and exciting I have seen. The two best hockey teams from that era.

I like watching hockey live at the arenas. The energy of the crowd can get pretty intense. Not so much when on tv.

That Detroit/Colorado rivalry was classic. It made both teams better, tougher and was a lot of fun to watch for many years. It may still be there in some fans minds, but I think it has mostly faded with time.
