I am new to pipe smoking and enjoy it very much. I would like to make it clear I am not showing off and defer to all the experienced pipe smokers. Consistently I got tongue burn. I resolved this by diving the tip of my tongue behind the bottom teeth. For me the tongue has greater surface area and has less saliva than the roof of my mouth. So I direct the smoke to the upper pallet. The upper pallet does not burn for me. As far as drag lying the stem in the tongue increases drag and therefore I have to inhale more and receive hot smoke. I also open my mouth wide with the lips around the stem to decrease drag and cool the smoke. A long and slow draw also cools the smoke. That’s my two cents worth as my first post. I hope I did not offend.

Security, remove this guy!
Nonsense, I often learn a lot from people new to the hobby, your observations are in line with my experience.
Proper moisture level of the tobacco plays a key role, burning off moisture converts the water to steam, but there can be a delicate balance… too dry is not good either. Fresh MacBaren tobaccos always bite me, age really helps.
Peterson P-lip stems direct the smoke to the top of your palate and away from the tongue, which is their creation… people seem to either love or hate them though.
Sipping slowly as you mentioned, is very important.

Aromatics often -- not always -- tend to be more bitey, owing to the extra moisture from the flavoring, so you'll want to be careful. Do you have any particular flavors in mind? Cherry, vanilla, maple, chocolate, rum, licorice, among others, are popular, but obviously very different.

For aromatics, Wilke brands seem to have a good following here, I will let others give the specifics though.

Well, I just smoked a bit of Cornell & Diehl's Autumn Evening, which has a maple topping. I believe it's also their best-selling tobacco, so it seems a lot of people who try it like it.

Wilke Rum and Maple is the very best. According to Jiminks.
Wilke Pipe Tobacco - Rum and Maple
Brand Wilke Pipe Tobacco Blended By John Brandt Manufactured By Wilke Pipe Tobacco Blend Type Aromatic Contents Burley, Cavendish, Virginia Flavoring Maple, Rum Cut Ribbon Packaging Bulk Country US Production Currently available Product Image Strength Mild, Mild to Medium Flavoring Mild to Medium, Medium Taste Mild to Medium Room Note Very Pleasant, Pleasant 4.0 2 reviewsReviews 4 star: 2 3 star: 0 2 star: 0 1 star: 0 Sort By HELPFULNESS NEWEST OLDEST STRENGTH FLAVORING TASTE ROOM NOTE Please login to review this blend. JimInks Reviewed By Date Rating Strength Flavoring Taste Room Note JimInks (2917) 2020-08-24 ★★★★ Mild to Medium Medium Mild to Medium Very Pleasant The flue cured Virginia provides grass, a little hay, and lightly tart and tangy citrusy with a touch of tangy dark fruit. It’s the lead component. The nutty, woody, earthy, toasty burley is a secondary player. The sugary black cavendish adds a little sweetness. In every rum and maple blend I have ever smoked, the rum is the dominant topping. Not so here, where the maple takes a little of the lead. The interplay of toppings sublimate the tobaccos without totally drowning them out. The strength is a step short of the center of mild to medium. The taste is a slot past that center. The nic-hit is mild. There’s no chance of bite or harshness. No rough spots either. Burns cool, clean and smooth with a fairly consistently deep sweetness from first puff to last. Leaves little dampness in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. The short lived after taste and room notes are very pleasant. The room smell certainly passes the wife test. An easy going all day, comfortable smoke. Four stars out of four.

Ps: You might want to look for an older estate Peterson System Standard pipe. The new ones can be iffy if you believe most of the recent purchasers.

For what’s it’s worth I clean the pipes with Renaissance Wax. It’s used by the British Museum and restoration specialists. I use it on my pistols and thought I would try it on my pipes. They really turn out nice with this wax.

I would like to try an aromatic. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm not fond of aromatics generally, as I find the delicious aroma does not usually translate into a good flavor. And yet, some consider Mac Baren Scottish Blend (Mixture) an aromatic or semi-aromatic, and it has been my favorite blend since I first discovered it 46 years ago. I also remember Cornell & Diehl's Autumn Evening (which a couple of us have already mentioned) as being a good smoke, and somewhat to my surprise I quite enjoyed C&D's Jolly Old St. Nicholas.

I’ll try the aromatics and do a tobacco smoke tasting.

This is off topic but instead of starting a new thread I thought I would contribute here. When I started to smoke I received a lot of advice how not to burn the rim of the bowl. I'm sure experienced smokers do not have this problem. But I have singed a lot of bowl rims. I found heat resistant tape at Amazon. It withstands heat up to 400 degrees. I tape it around the bowl rim. I is not pretty but it has saved my bowl rims from getting scorched. I was going to down load a picture but I think this website only allows one to insert an image using html. I don't know how to use html.

A little spit wiped around the rim just before lighting helps prevent and clean rim scorch.

Wilke Rum and Maple is the very best. According to Jiminks. I have to be honest, I fail to see how anyone could make a confident decision on a new tobacco from a Jiminks review. Every one of them reads the same: X tobacco is earthy, woody, tangy, citrusy, plumy, bready, toasty, floral, zesty, savory, sour, and variously a lead, supporting player, lingering, has no chance of bitterness, bite or harshness, etc.--They read like copy/paste reviews.

I agree with you on that, but in this case he told me personally and directly without all the words. And I know that he actually works very hard at creating each review.

Another thing you could try is purchase a churchwarden. The longer stem gives a longer distance to cool the smoke. That, or try a falcon.
That said, i got tongue bite as a beginner too...I'm not advanced by any means, but after learning how to pack and having my tobacco a little drier, I don't get tongue bite much at all.

I got tongue bite for the first time in a long time yesterday. I packed the bowl too tight. Having a tight draw creates a vacuum that opens up the pores of the tongue and lets the smoke get to more sensitive tissue.
