Has anyone here had luck successfully rehydrating completely dried out pipe Tobacco? And when I say successful, I mean when you smoked it, it tasted comparable to how it should taste?

Sometimes completely dried out pipe tobacco can taste wonderful, and rehydrating is unnecessary. Other times, as with very old improperly stored pipe tobacco, it cannot be redeemed flavorwise. When I do rehydrate, I put a pipeful in my palm and cup with the other hand leaving a hole between my thumbs so I can blow moist air into the tobacco. Usually 10-20 blows of moist air gets the job done. YMMV

All the time. Tastes just the same when done correctly. Gradually rehydrate only with distilled water, and once rehydrated, let it air just a bit to get to the right pliability and moisture content. Where things get a bit off is if it's a bone dry aromatic and then sometimes the flavor gets a bit off but usually balances back out once let to air and somewhat dry down again after the rehydration.
There are a ton of ways to do it, but step one. Never use paper towel, it will make your tobacco taste like a wet paper towel. Try and only use ceramic, hydrostone, plain distilled water within the container but not touching the tobacco, or generally just lightly misting the tobacco directly and tossing it around vigorously until it starts to dry again. I use clay stone/hydrostone and get perfect rehydration for most blends. Even if 5,10, 20 year old tobacco.
It helps to consider that your tobacco has been rehydrated numerous times before you even purchased it. It's hung to dry to a crisp, it's then wiped down and misted and cased and then dried. It's then rehydrated again and again to add either more casings or toppings and to get to a final moisture content before sale.

Well this will be an experiment. I've had success with modestly dried tobacco. This was severe. Someone gave me the end of their 8 year old stonehaven. The seal was compromised and the flakes were bone dry. Like powder dry. I have a couple of clay tabs and a piece of tobacco tin liner paper moist with distilled. We shall see.

My few instance of overly dried tobacco steeled my resolve to ride herd on not letting it happen. I have done all the right things to rehydrate tobacco and have never been impressed with the outcome. I hope that you have better results. It is worth giving it a shot, especially with anything Esoterica. tinbids.com/auction/3104/

For that price, smoking it should transport me to Some sort of wonderland.

For that price, smoking it should transport me to Some sort of wonderland. Wrong type of bag, sir! Thats ridiculous though. And it's a blend I don't even like.

I wonder if it is a Chinese buyer, they seem to have unlimited funds for anything related to the hobby.

So many better and similar English blends out there for cheap instead of paying $600 for Penzance. That's absurd. I've got a dried to a complete bone tin of 2014 Balkan Sobranie if anyone wants that garbage for $50 LOL.
It's nothing like the old Sobranie and it was unbalanced bought for like $14, now the tins go for up there like Penzance is why i thought of it. I'll eventually rehydrate that tin.

I rarely rehydrate. If it's a little dry, I just smoke it as is. Most of my tins don't last that long. If it's crumbling to dust, it's beyond recovery as far as I'm concerned.

Makes me wonder what the couple whole tubs of Balkan Sobranie original white and black 759 my B&M has last fall at $800-900 per tub would go for on this tinbids business. Probably $2k a pop. They were late 70's to 80's time frame tubs. And absolutely guaranteed to be well past their prime, taste flat, and just be some boring amalgamation of far too much age and staleness. I've smoked some 20 year English mixtures that were still great if a little lighter, but 30+ years and they don't have much prospect.

Some/many blends reveal an improvement in flavor and smoking properties when dry. YMMV.

It rehydrated faster than I expected, feels like fresh moist Stonehaven now. I'm going to let it settle for a couple of weeks before giving it a try.

I opened an aged tin of Cabbie’s mixture (rectangular tin that are prone to drying out) forgot about it in a zippered pouch that had been there at least a month.
Although, not completely dried out, it was far drier than I wanted to smoke.
Dumped it into a mason jar and soaked a ball of paper towels with distilled water, almost to the point of dripping, but not.
After two days the tobacco rehydrated and it is as good as it was before, but this was not a long time… time, I believe plays a huge role.

I resurrected a few tins/jars with success. One was a whole tin of Dark Star which was jarred only to did out a couple years later that the lid was not on right. The tobacco was as dry as could be. Did the old paper towel and distilled water trick for about a week adding a few drops of water a day, and it was as good as new!
