I'm getting towards the end of a 10 day trip to Ireland. I had visions (delusions) of returning to the states stocked up on Esoterica and other European blends I can rarely find. But man... after traveling through Dublin, Doolin, the Aran Islands, Galway, Cong, Limmerick, Cork and currently Kinsale, I'm really amazed at the lack of tobacconists. Of course I got a Peterson at the Dublin store and a James Fox blend at their store... but that's really all I've found! Legend Lover and others in Ireland, do you guys rely mostly on mail order? Or (just as likely) there's been a treasure trove under my nose that I've passed right by?

Legend Lover lives in NI, not Ireland.

“I’m getting towards the end of a 10 day trip to Ireland… after traveling through Dublin, Doolin, the Aran Islands, Galway, Cong, Limmerick, Cork and currently Kinsale,”
Next time grasshopper, ask before you go.
For future reference, if you contacted several of the tobacco manufacturers that you wanted to get product from, and asked them for addresses, I imagine they would have been helpful.

Pipe shops are scarce through most of the world

My son-in-law had a similar experience in Dublin, recently. He bought a pipe at the Peterson shop. They had tobacco, but the salesperson told him it would actually be cheaper to buy pipe tobacco in Scotland. He ended up getting Condor and Mick McQuaid there and the rest was purchased in Glasgow.

I had visions (delusions) of returning to the states stocked up on Esoterica Sounds like a fun trip! Esoterica is an Arango brand exclusive to the US market but there are many other Germain mixtures that are not imported to the States though.

Peterson shop sells some, but even then it doesn't sell its own anymore, if I recall correctly. There's a wee shop in Belfast called Miss Moran's, but they have mostly OTC brands and not a great selection, but compared to anywhere else (of which there is none) they have the best selection in the country. The other issue is that the tobacco is overpriced there and the staff are quite rude and obnoxious. That all feeds into my decision to order online.

So it sounds like the best option would be to order it online from a shop in the UK, Germany, and have it shipped to a hotel, maybe at the last stop? If a flight home takes you through Heathrow, Condorlover (Simon) used to hit up the duty free shop for some of us stateside.
I don’t know if there are any limits on how much you can bring through customs into the US.

I couldn't remember if Legend Lover was in the North or not; sorry bout that! I would love to see it sometime as well. But all good points, thanks guys. This was a pretty short-notice trip with a group of friends, so me finding tobacco was not exactly a high priority. I was just hoping to score a bit. Well I've got my keepsake Pete and a tin of Bankers to try anyway. The important things are that several families had some good adventures together, and we saw some beautiful and awe-inspiring things. I'm still trying to process the fact that I've now seen and touched human workings from the Bronze age. You all know the old joke about the difference between an American and a European tourist... the American thinks 100 years is old, and the European thinks 100km is far. 😁 I did not know that Esoterica wasn't sold in Europe. I knew Germain's makes it but didn't know why it was a separate brand. That's interesting, thanks.

We took a 10 day tour of the Republic of Ireland in 84 and have been dying to do it again but to spend a month there.

If a flight home takes you through Heathrow, Condorlover (Simon) used to hit up the duty free shop for some of us stateside. I don’t know if there are any limits on how much you can bring through customs into the US. It’s been a little over 3 years since I was last in Europe and brought home pipe tobacco. At the time, the US Customs website said to check with port of entry for info on pipe tobacco. My port of entry is usually Detroit and my info is based on what I’ve been told by US Customs there. For cigarettes and cigars, there is a personal exemption of 200 cigarettes (ie 1 carton) and 100 cigars. That means you can bring that many of each and not owe duty. For pipe tobacco, there is no personal exemption and it is subject to a duty of $2.82 per pound. In my experiences, if you only have a pound or two, they do not bother with the paperwork for so little. Officers have told me what they are really concerned about is someone trying to bring hundreds of pounds of loose leaf.
