In another thread recently, I stated that larger pipes leave more dottle. Several people disagreed with me. This has made me question another thing: heat. My pipes very rarely get hot. Warm, sure, but not hot. When heat does happen, it's because I'm in a really bad mood. When my mood is foul, I tend to smoke too fast. Fortunately that doesn't happen often. Comments?

Personal experience is thicker walled pipes get less hot.

If the pipe is stuck in my face and I'm busy with something, or driving in traffic, or distracted and anxious, I get that. The bad taste usually makes me stop before the pipe gets dangerously hot.

Thicker walls do tend to be cooler. Sandblasts and rusticated pipes tend to have less perceived heat.
