Milan's Our Carter Hall/Sutliff's Toasted Burley mix, in a bent bulldog from Jursa...the toasted burley adds a layer of nutty flavor to the O.C.H., and slows down the burn rate.

Slooooowly working my way through a bowl of Presbyterian in my 2021 Dunhill Ring Grain group 1 Quaint Acorn. So far so good, but I’m only puffing for a minutes here and there. This is only my second bowl in this pipe as it had arrived just a couple of days before I went into the hospital.

This past weekend I started looking through my boxes of pipes to pick out some new ones to use and I ran across a box of assorted briar pipes that I’ve acquired over the years when I bought collections to get various meerschaum pipes. This one caught my eye so I cleaned it up to smoking condition. Although it needs a more thorough cleaning, wax and polish, I haven’t smoked any briar pipe since 1989 so I wanted to give it a try before spending too much time on it. It reads WDC in a triangle and Royal Demuth. I suspect it’s rather old. I’m smoking Carter Hall in it right now and I’m quite enjoying the pipe.

WDC (William Demuth Company) were a massive pipe factory in New York, started in 1862. The Royal Demuth line was started around 1900, but the company went out of business in 1972. Your pipe is pre-1972 and from the looks possibly dates back to the 1930s-1960's. They made a bunch of very detailed meerschaum figurals early on and a bunch of specialty meer filtered pipes, and tar trap pipes as you'd see Grabow/Linkman, and many others doing during those days. WDC even made jumbo Wellington's that were about 10 inches long and not even "churchwardens," they were just massive bent billiards. I'd love to find one of those pipes!

I’m pretty sure that I have at least one old meerschaum pipe marked WDC, but I knew nothing about them. A giant Wellington does sound cool. I’m smoking 3P’s in a calabash right now.
