Does anyone have a tried and true method for removing old stain without sanding? I am trying to remove stain on the stamping areas and don't want to lose the clarity by sanding it. I've tried alcohol and acetone. Any other tricks?

It appears this technique also serves as tonail fungus remover. How versatile.

Yep, that's the same Dave G that has been part of a few different forums. He and I remain in regular contact. He hasn't done restos for about 2 years now.

Figured so, when I googled his name, up came Pipedia page on LHS/ Sterncrest pipes which he is an authority on. Glad to hear that he is still with us.

The method he describes seems most appropriate for smooth pipes. For a rusticated one, I started with Dave's method, but used a toothbrush instead of steel wool or a rag. I'm sure steel wool would have been better for smooth briar. I then went to straight alcohol, again with a toothbrush - this got off a lot more of the stain, but not anywhere near all of it. I suspect the stummel would need to be soaked in alcohol or acetone to get off more stain.
