The article is fine. If you don't read the article, here's a suggestion. Smoke a bowl in a Peterson system pipe. Remove the stem after the smoke, and shine a pen light down into the sump. Unless your smoke was a very dry one, you'll see lots of moisture, which gathered together as the humid smoke passed through the draft, as well as entering the stem, and dripped down and was caught. Not ALL of the moisture will be caught and dropped into the sump...but a lot of it. It really makes a difference.
The article talks about the lack of efficiency with using stingers. Some stingers work better than others. Having smoked a lot of stinger pipes, the Grabow scoop stinger is the best I've used. However, I don't believe any stinger works as well as a true system pipe in trapping moisture.

The System pipes have certainly spoiled me. BIG system pipes. My two House and one Pub is about all I smoke these days. Anybody have either of these they’d like to get rid of lemme know.

I have a "System" Peterson that I like but cant see on the description of the one in the link that it is. If it is I want to buy it.

Yes, that’s it. Only mine are rusticated. (Take note of the bore and stroke they quote. My last House was way off from what they quoted. It didn’t affect my satisfaction with the pipe, just my confidence in their accuracy on dimensions.) You WILL enjoy it!

Wow, what a read!
It confirmed some things I thought, gave great food for thought on some things I had not considered, and some good advice going forward.
Thanks for the link!

Interesting article. I love my Peterson, but the first one I had didn't suit me at all. It was a P-Lip and I just didn't like the way it felt or the way the smoke was directed to the roof of my mouth. Don't remember what I did with it, but it didn't remain in my rotation long. I later bought one with the fish tail and it is a great pipe. Been thinking about getting another.

Never had a Peterson system pipe but the fluid dynamics and deluxe system have convinced me to go ahead and get a Peterson Deluxe system. Gotta get the additional chimney with the Deluxe. I've also never had a p-lip stem and only own one other Peterson, which is an Aran chubby straight billiard, and that is a great pipe in it's own right. I'm left deliberating on whether I'll get the 20FB to have a sitter Oom Paul, standard Oom Paul, or a bent apple or billiard. It's gotta be smooth though I really don't like their rustication or shallow blasting I've seen available.
EDIT: Oh, I do have a 1970 Savinelli sandblasted Oom Paul system pipe but it's clearly not a real system, it just simply has a teeny, tiny little dimple at the end of the stem and as far as I could ever tell, it really does nothing for the smoking qualities. It's a great pipe but I don't even think of it as being a system of any sort.

I would call the 20FB a “small pipe.”

I would call the 20FB a “small pipe.” It's a medium to me. I get a good long smoke out of it. I actually wanted the larger version, (11FB), but after looking for a year none showed up at SP or the Italian shops I like so I gave in. Couldn't be happier.

Additional chimney? Peterson system pipes don't have a chimney extension. Peterson "System Deluxe" pipes have an aluminum chimney extension that differs and goes further down past the chamfer and past the draft hole.

Ohhhh. I thought you were talking about something that fitted between the shank and the stem to lengthen the draft or something.

I didn't know this difference until the other day reading through that article and then looking for pictures to show the differences. I'd been on the fence about getting a traditional shape like a bent billiard, apple, or oom paul in a system pipe but I'm going to end up with one now. I also thought when hearing chimney it would have meant a bowl or shank extension.

I wish on SmokingPipes they'd take detailed photos like this, showing all the stems on all pipes removed and close ups showing the tenons. Thanks, Bob!

I have been amazed on how many people say that the measurements at SP are off.
Measure twice, describe once should be the plan.

I am really liking the looks of that new Peterson Halloween 2022 pipe in the 05 shape with that sharp contrasted bright orange acrylic fishtail stem. I just might have to get one of these before I get a Deluxe. Herein lies a perfect example of confusing system descriptions. It's a silver nickel army mounted pipe, and the initial description states the 2021 Halloween pipes were "system" pipes, but then each pipe listed goes on to not show a photo of it, or even bother mentioning if it really is a system pipe.
Re-reading this part, I guess this makes it clear enough that it is indeed a regular system pipe;
"Introduced over a decade ago and lasting only for several years, Peterson's annual Samhain series commemorated the seasonal Gaelic holiday that marked the end of the harvest and the transition to winter — known today as Halloween. The celebration returned in 2021 with Peterson's Halloween pipes, combining the cauldron-black sandblast and blood red-swirled acrylic stem of the marque's iconic Dracula line with nickel army mounts and Charles Peterson's patented System engineering. The Halloween 2022 edition follows that tradition with a distinctly autumnal motif:"

When I hear the name Sykes, I think about the Alien Nation movie with James Caan and Mandy Patinkin. 😂 "Det. Samuel 'George' Francisco: It is like your name... Sykes. I'm sure it doesn't bother you at all that it sounds like "ss'ai k'ss," two words in my language which mean "excrement" and "cranium." Det. Samuel 'George' Francisco: Shithead."
