So this past weekend i went to the cabin and my friend who i train with came with me, his name is Jose. I was showing him around the place and he saw the pipe rack on the wall and thought it was for decoration honestly. We hung out and ate lunch and got a fire started and a little while later, we had a cigar. Later that evening, we were sitting inside and i walked to the pipe rack and grabbed a pipe as well as some tobacco. He said “you actually smoke those”? To which i replied “yes”. He asked why i like to smoke a pipe and what it did for me. I explained that i only smoke a pipe when i know i will have time to enjoy it and part of the enjoyment doesn’t necessarily have to do with the smoking part. I explained that when one wants a cigarette, its a flick of a lighter and about 3 minutes later, you're done, you got your nicotine and you're done. With a cigar, its a little bit more involved but in essence, you light it, you smoke it and while certainly slower paced and more enjoyable than a cigarette, it’s pretty straightforward. I went on to the pipe and started packing it and told him that with a pipe, its like a ritual that requires a bit of time and a bit of patience but something that relaxes me. From getting the proper pack to getting a good char light to getting the bowl glowing, its about the “journey”. Even once its lit, there is some tending to it but it requires me to slow down, to concentrate a bit on what I’m doing and to enjoy the process. When I'm smoking a pipe, i seldom think about anything else except the warmness in my hand, the flavor of my tobacco and watching wisps of smoke rise in the air. With the pipe for me, its about the journey, not the destination. It really gives me an opportunity to focus on something truly relaxing and helps me slow down the crazy world around me. He looked at me and just said “wow”.

Pretty well sums it up, Scott. I enjoy a pipe less and less when I am doing things, I wish I could be like the old codgers from the past that smoked a pipe while farming, to being engaged in a battle. My best pipe smoking experiences, are with my friends at the pipe club, a close second, is in the back yard or out in nature in the desert southwest at this time of year and the next several months.

Your explanation of smoking a pipe is the exact reason why I started smoking a pipe.
Well said.

That's a great explanation. Very few IRL people know I smoke a pipe, but I've explained it to those close to me quite succinctly as my time-out ritual. But I do smoke when doing other things, too.

I have had similar conversations with many of the younger guys at work. We now have about 7-8 guys that are budding pipe smokers and one has jumped into making pipes. He has now made about twenty since starting in July. I will post pics of a few of his pipes in a separate thread later. It gives me a lot of satisfaction to know I had something to do with planting the seed of pipe smoking with a few friends who have in turn done the same with a few more.

Good on you for that, helping younger people experience and enjoy something is important. Id love to see the pipes
