Man-oh man!!! I wouldn't wish this on anybody. My big toe has been dragging me through hell for over a week. I went to a doctor about the discoloration but a nail Teck said it was a fungus, gave me some cream, trimmed my nails, and sent me on my way...Nope, not a fungus... Two days later and the pain set in for real...I sleep with a pain patch, take some over the counter pain meds, and go from Aspercream to Ben Gay. what seems to help the most is an herbal mixture I grow myself. I did a search of what foods may have set this off, and most of the things I like are on the list. I've been cutting back on everything and cutting out a few things, and I've lost 12 pounds, but I still have a big red toe that will not bend.

Take care, Herb. My dad dealt with gout attacks for several years, he told me it felt like broken glass in his toe. Went for a monthly dose of some sort of an infusion, I think for 4 or 6 months. That took care of it.

I tried all the natural stuff & the only thing that helps me is what the Doctor prescribed. I won't be without it. First time I got it was out of town & if I had my shotgun with me, I would have shot my big toe & surrounding area off so it would feel better. Wish you well.

Man alive, that sounds unpleasant to say the least. I do love my food, so i need to watch out for that (and diabetes too).

I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with gout. It truly is crippling when they occur.
I had my first gout attack about 15 years ago and wouldn't wish it on anyone. I thought I broke my to at first, but the pain got worse. As with you, many of my favorite foods are on the list of things that can contribute to an attack. A change of diet can be rough, but seems to be the best thing to help reduce future flair-ups.
I've tried many of the home remedies. The only one that seems to help mitigate it somewhat for me is tart cherry juice. My last doctor prescribed colchicine, and that helped cut down the attacks from 1-2 weeks to just a few days. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a doctor accepting new patients since I moved back to New Hampshire a few years ago, so if I have an attack it is for the full duration.

The condition you had might have been wonderful, but I've just suffered through the most painful two day in my 68 years on this planet, with no itch B.T.W.... I'm on day 2 of a 6 day run of Methylprednlsolone, and the first of two antibiotics, and I'm waiting on a skin-graft type patch to cover a sliver-dollar sized blister was lanced to drain away the fluid on my shin. I spent night before last in the recliner, but with the meds on board, I managed to stay in bed all night last night.

I haven't had gout in years but the only medicine that gets rid of the pain is called Indocin. Take with food as it can be a bit rough on the stomach. The shite works amazingly well. I am amazed no doctor has prescribed it.

Thank you, all for your kind thoughts. Yesterday ended my steroid treatment period of six days, and today was my first pain-free day in three weeks. My antibiotics continue for another week, and this morning I added an anti-inflammatory that I'll be on until all my symptoms are resolved. My toe, which had become dark red in color, is almost back to normal. If I've learned anything through this, it's not to accept the word of the first person you see...a nurse-practitioner miss-diagnosed me as having a rash...a week later, when I was just shy of septic, a wound care specialist put me on the right path. I waited way too long for a second opinion, that won't happen again!

There's no shame in getting things checked out (even again by someone else if you're not happy).

Misdiagnosis and treatment almost killed my wife once, and another time had her in peril. Once, it was me catching it, once her insistence during a hospital stay.
You have to ride herd on these things and ideally have a spouse that is your second set of eyes, ears, and mouth.
