I really think 70 is about as high as you need to go. 100 doesn’t really offer much more and is mostly a waste IMO. I agree with that for patched round ball. However, with a mini or maxi, you need the heavier load of 90 to 110. (With all the 3F shooters here, I should mention that I use 2F in my rifle. I use 3F in my revolver (Ruger Old Army).)

Thanks, John. I should have been more specific. (I use PRBs only in my long rifle.)

With the 9" barrel, most of the powder burned outside the barrel. Still kicked, but it rotated up more than back. I didn't have any 69 caliber balls, and I never weighed the whole tube, (100?) of BBs. Maybe 400 grains?

9" barrel? The powder doesn't have time to burn LOL.

As a home defense weapon that thing would first tenderize the perp then cook him.

As a home defense weapon that thing would first tenderize the perp then cook him. As previously mentioned, the frizzen sucked. You never knew when it would go off. More fun than a barrel of rabid monkeys on meth.

More fun than a barrel of rabid monkeys on meth. Did you need a new flint? Sergeant Obadiah Hakeswell of the old 33rd Regiment of Foot nearly always figured the frizzen failed because someone sold his flint. You would not do that, now would you?

I bought premium flints from Track of the Wolf. It was the cheap frizzen on the cheap copy of a Tower flintlock. But when it did fire it was fun. I have a tin of Caseinite and I always intended to harden the frizzen, but I never got around to it. I don't know what ever happened to that POS, but if I had the money to buy a real one I would. I would even buy a box of those 770 grain balls.

I can see it. I will be using a new powder horn tomorrow and will be shooting my Tennessee percussion rifle in 50. I will try to take some pictures or video.

It has been a while, but I used to shoot my 1858 pattern Enfield. It shoots a 58 Caliber 510 grain lead minie ball. Lots of fun, and you almost don't need a spotting scope.
I have been tempted to build a traditional flintlock. Some of Kibbler's offerings look really nice lately, but I am holding out for a proper New England Fowler pattern.

Well… a fowling piece anyway. Not really a musket.

I have two flinders; a .32 squirrel rifle in which I use (I believe) #1 shot because .32 round ball is prohibitively expensive, and a .72 smooth bore trade gun reputed to have been build by Curly Gustomsky. I really love the .72, but the round ball weighs a ton when you’re hauling it around in your possibles bag…LOL.

The .75 balls are about 75 cents each, but, really, how many do you think you need to carry? They are a little over an ounce each.

.310 balls can be moulded for pennies. My experience with small caliber MLs is that they are uber-finicky. Very sensitive to load variations and barrel condition. The “average” .31 lead ball weighs about 50 grains. A pound of lead (pure lead recommended with no additives) will make 150 of the little buggers. If you had to pay $10 for a pound of lead that makes each ball cost 6¢. Scavenged lead can be free!
PS… Amazon sells pure lead ingots for $5.60/pound. (Free delivery for Prime!) That brings the moulded ball price down to under 4¢.

Now that's a fine-looking rifle! Thanks for the pictures. I hate to sound pedantic, but it isn't a rifle. It's a fusil, a smooth bore. Call it a shotgun if you like for it can digest loads of bird shot, or fire a round ball, at my discretion. Thanks for the compliment.
