The Japanese are strange. I really liked the following article on gourd calabash pipes.

The Japanese are strange. I really liked the following article on gourd calabash pipes. I read that too. I question the accuracy of the calabash article. I have five pre Boer war calabash pipes, all reliably dateable due to silver hallmarks. My oldest is English made from 1889. It’s no secret that they became popular from the Boer war, but the articles claims are erroneous on a number of points. Of course the current author is just quoting an earlier article by a guy who claimed to invent the form we think of. Who knows, maybe he invented Velcro too.
