I did a major cellar reorganization of my tins today and had some surprises, one good, others not. The good news is I found two tins of Ferndown Black and Tan I had completely forgotten. I remember picking them up in Richmond, Va while on a business trip for the corporation a few years ago. Pretty obscure stuff, only 4 TR reviews. Pipe Stud went 4 stars. Should be fun to crack. On the down side, I have some tins which wobble like webbles. They're from the usual list of suspects, 2013 C&D Exhausted Rooster, 2013 C&D Opening Nights and 2016 G.L. Pease Temple Bar (C&D). I fully get it tins don't necessarily mean the game is over; however, nobody wants to find them. The quantities are minimal, three of the former two mentioned and two of the latter. The only tin of Opening Night I smoked was killer fresh and sure it would be incredible with age. There seems to be three viable options: 1) Keep them, separate them from the herd, take my chances and drive on. 2) Somewhat certain they all came from Smoking Pipes but receipts long gone. Great customer service though and I'm sure they would lend any possible advice if asked. 3) Contact C&D directly. I've never been this route. Perhaps some of the rest of y'all have and could offer some advice? Obviously, I could just tap them. I'd get an education if nothing else, have jars on hand if the tobacco is still OK, trash bags if not and it wouldn't be overly costly. Any advice, suggestions or even smart arse comments would be appreciated.

All I can suggest is that crack the tins then go from there. If they are good then jar them. If not then circular file them.

I recently sold my last C&D tin. I am relieved to not have any more blends from them. Not bashing them it just isn't in my DNA to worry about tobacco tins. I have enough in life to worry about.
I hope your tins are fine. If you crack them to check you can always jar them for later.

Have smoked quite a few tins. No ill effect. Pop them and check it out. Careful when popping them though

A tin is not necessarily a bad thing. It can mean that fermentation is taking place, rather than any mold concerns.

Great comments y'all and many thanks. I believe I'll just let them ride, maybe tap one to see some results and hopefully enjoy some smokes.

My recommendation would be to crack them open and then jar them. I have a friend from pipe club who has had several C&D tins "pop". I can assure you, it is not a noise you want to hear in the middle of the night. Think... being jolted out of a sound sleep, jumping up from bed, grabbing the shotgun and running around the house in your PJ's yelling, "Who the hell is there?" Yeah. Jar them. For the sake of a good nights sleep.

Don't listen to them knuckleheads, they all have bad advice.
4) Send to Trailboss...he is expertly trained on situations such as this. If you crack them tins, you could release tobacco-botulism, there has never been a recorded case of anyone surviving such an incident. In return you will get a detailed analysis, and if deemed safe, your empty collectible tin will be returned.

I'm curious and will crack them this weekend for the education. Photo Bucket has been a real pain lately but I'll try to post pics if I encounter mold for others to view.

I have never had a problem with photobucket...uploads are seamless, and copying and pasting is a snap....not saying that Imgur isn't better, but have never had any problems.

I popped one tin of each this afternoon. Nothing funky looking inside, only what appears to be some very yummy tobacco. No damage done and three new tins to smoke this spring. Win-win.
