Being a noob here I realize that most of the folks on this forum have no Idea who I am or the things I enjoy.
But, sittin here in my mancave, enjoying different tobacco's from my ever growing cellar, I have realized that I probably enjoy smoking them in the resurrected briars almost as much as I do the tobacco.
Don't get me wrong, there's nothing like finding a blend that really sings to ya. But I also derive great satisfaction from smoking them in what was once a beat up, neglected or totally grunged out old smoker.
It's probably a toss up for me, whether or not I enjoy refurbin these old smokers or enjoyin em with with a great blend and sippin a nice Scotch, Bourbon or Cognac.
I realize that there's more that I don't know, about restoring pipes & the myriad of blends available, but I sure am enjoyin the journey.
Thanks for answering my many, many questions and for offering your sage advice.
Take care & God Bless

I a totally with you Dino! I even enjoy a ressurected pipe more than a new one. The proudness of having restored it back to pristine condition adds to the pleasure of smoking.

I'm happy that you can smoke in your own home. You're lucky most of the guys I read on the various pipe boards are forced outdoors to a deck, patio, garage or shed. I never would have developed a love for pipes if I didn't have a comfortable place to enjoy a pipe. Moderation in the key to a happy home with a non smoking wife. I never could have built my collection without estate pipes. I enjoy cleaning and restoring them by hand.

I have a couple estate pipes from the mid 1800's, one from 1899...(my grandma's birth year pipe), and as I smoke them I think about what a respite the pipe must have been from the hardscrabble life they lived...we turn a faucet on and have hot water, open the fridge, adjust the thermostat, etc.....we take for granted, the comforts that hey could only dream of, but the fact that I hold the well preserved pipe in my hand tells me that the pipe was probably a luxury to them...(Meerschaums).
Moving into this century, some estate pipes are my greatest smokers, from my WO Larsen that serves as a nightcap altar where I burn the sacrifice, or my 50's vintage GBD that really delivers the Virginia's to the palate.
Frankly, i get more enjoyment out of opening a package of an estate pipe than I do a new one...but that's just me.

Never smoked an estate I didn't love... tried, tested, and true... like me.
