My Maytag front loading washer and dryer have served me well since 2005, never a service call, but the dryer is developing a squeak. 17 years is a pretty good run on modern washers and dryers, probably going to fix the dryer with a service call (depending on the housecall price), I would dig into it myself, but the laundry room is too tiny to maneuver with a leg on the mend.
The local mom and pop chain, had a great price on a Samsung pair, but I told a friend that researches everything, and knows this guy. Speed Queen is the gold standard, but surprisingly LG has a pretty good front loader… Samsung washers are pretty much garbage.
He goes over laundry/ fridge/ stove/ dishwashers in a 20 minute segment from the perspective of a repairman.

Had a Hotpoint washer for 26 years, repaired it once with a low cost part, replaced it with a Speed Queen, and thankfully no repairs at this point, who the hell knows what will happen next, the old saying, they sure the hell don't make'em like they used to, YMMV.

The only appliance we'll buy anymore is Frigidaire. Especially washing machines and dryers. Also dishwashers. GE window units. Had 3 LGs and another Chinese brand that were junk. And don't ever buy anything from the Insignia brand from Best Buy. Worst Chinese junk. Couldn't repair or replace it after 6 months m

I’ve got a Maytag washer and dryer from 1992 that are still running strong. I put a new belt in the washer about six years ago, it was an easy install to top it off, but that’s been it. A trim piece popped off from the controls panel a few years ago and I accidentally stepped on it when I went to pick it up, so I didn’t put it back on, but other than that they both still look great too. I’ve got another set with less than a year’s use on them in storage waiting for the day these are kaput.

They aren't the same, but I don't know how good they are.

Just bought whirlpool washer & dryer a year ago. AND the extended warantee. Last washer we had a board went out in it, the price for the circuit boards online was $365.00. Repair man was going to charge $465.00 installed. He told me Samsung, LG and the other Chinese appliances were his money makers. Appliances aren't like they were in the old days.

I was told that Grundig were great for washing machines and dryers. Maybe that's the best available in the UK, but our Grundig is great. Comes with a 10 year warranty.

When engineers/machinists/craftsmen made things they wanted them to last. When Suits took over they want them to have a profitable “use life.”

Anything Grundig is horribly expensive in the States and I've never seen or heard of a Grundig washing machine. I know that they make the best radios.

One thing that the service tech in the video says is to never use the self clean feature on your oven. Buy the easy off and clean it by hand.
He says that the superheating of the oven shortens the life.

The tech in the video does not recommend LG washers, but he says that the front load model is an exception if you go that route. He gives the specific model numbers if you go to YouTube page and look at the notes for the show.

Info for future Speed Queen washer buyers, their washers are of 2 kinds, one agitates slowly, good for retired people who don’t get their clothes very dirty, and one that has a stronger agitation, good for people who has diretier clothes, we have the softer one, we didn’t know, wife hates it, she’s used to the loud thump, thump of our old Maytag.

A couple interesting things about the tear down video to me was how puny the pulley and belt was on the modern washer compared to the direct drive of the older unit. And how he pointed to the capacitor on the circuit board of the newer machines of that model that are too small for the job, and are prone to fail. “99% of the technicians do not know (or care) to switch out a capacitor or relay for peanuts, and bill you for a $265? Circuit board. I had a similar issue with my Dodge Nitro, the TIPM (Total power Integrated Module) main fuse box. That same problem plagues a lot of Dodge/ Chrysler vehicles of that era. When you have them gremlins, a dealership service advisor cleans your wallet by installing another poorly engineered TIPM. The only real fox is to send it off to a company that reworks the unit and replaces relays and such that are up to the task. tipmrebuilders.com/chrysler-tipms-demystified-how-to-reliably-trace-specific-vehicle-symptoms-to-tipm-failure/When I described what I did to solve my problem for far less to a service advisor, he acted like it was not a known issue to them, and that “genuine mopar” parts are the gold standard. I am glad that we have the internet, or I would have burned through a lot more money than necessary. Back to appliances… the salesman touted the “Google reviews” on Samsung washers, they are in the high 4 out of 5 with thousands of reviews. All recent reviews are 1 star, and you see a pattern of all the similar issues of failures and Samsung not caring. When you get to page 3, every post is 5 stars with glowing reviews, but in the brackets it says [promotional review]… the bots and paid influencers work their craft.

My parents had a Frigidaire fridge that chalked up 40+ years. My Maytag heavy-duty (20#) washer is on its 23d year with no sign of giving up. (Jeez I hope I didn’t just jinx it!)

My Sears Kenmore Top Loader is close to 30 years on the job and has washed many heavy, very dirty loads. Still spinning and pumping.
The gas Dryer still operates but I do not have LPG anymore, so I use the great solar drier of Ra and the Pharos.

I prefer Electro-Mechanical appliances to the more modern Electronic Touch button solid state stuff. It is what I know. I have a nice old Multi Meter. I like to troubleshoot and solve problems. Right! Now my LG Range is soft touch and three of the five burners only work when they want to. I am told it needs a new Motherboard which is close to $400. I may spring for it eventually.

I had a 79 Ranchero I bought new. After the 4th computer failed and stranded me I started carrying a spare. I could change it on the side of the freeway in 3 minutes. For some reason the last one lasted for years. Only got rid of it because of the baby.

It is so dry here that I either hang them outside, where they dry in three hours, or inside (huge master bath) where they dry overnite. Why spend money?

My wife and I received a Kenmore washer and dryer from her parents as our wedding present in 1987. We got over 25 years of use out of them.
