Our horse Ty passed away peacefully and painlessly this morning. We found him collapsed but alive and unresponsive in the corral early this morning. Our vet arrived 20 minutes after we called. She said that he still had a heartbeat and was breathing, but he was not there. When she had returned from her truck with the euthanasia kit, she listened again with her stethoscope and determined that he had already passed away. Ty was 29 and had been with us since he was 13. Ty had his whole family in attendance when he passed. Per the vet's advice that it would be good to help them understand, we kept our other horses Beauty and Skye in the corral with Ty during this and while we waited for a friend to arrive with the industrial backhoe he owns. They also accompanied us out to the field for the burial as well. While we are sad and grieving the sudden passing of our family member, we take comfort in knowing that he lived a full and happy life and was provided the best care possible. The vet thinks that it was probably something like an aneurysm as it appears that he had simply collapsed and did not thrash around. So, we also take comfort in knowing that he did not suffer in the end. Left to right: Beauty, Skye, Ty (Ty was Skye's full blooded uncle):

Sure makes things go more smoothly when the animal is not suffering. Glad he went quickly quietly and with out suffering.

Thanks for sharing John. Critters have a way of grafting onto our hearts, and it is a tough day when they get removed from us.

Sorry to hear this, John. It sounds like he had the best family and care nearby at the ready. It also sounds like he lived a very full life, if I recall horses can live about 25-30 years.

Yes, usually close to 30. Over 30 and they’re considered to be very old. Ty had been slowing down some the past couple of years and we knew this day was coming, but not this soon. Other than a special diet of a couple pounds of senior feed twice a day and some trouble keeping his weight up, he was acting normal. If he was out in the pasture when I went out with his senior feed, he was still running in from the pasture to get it. I’ve had many a bowl in a cob or inexpensive briar while standing with him and waiting for him to eat his senior feed. I had to guard it otherwise, he’d let one of the mares steal feed from his bowl. He’d chase Beauty, the boss mare, away but let Skye in. I often wondered if he knew he was her full blooded uncle. Well, that was long but it’s cathartic to talk about him. It was a huge unexpected shock to find him by flashlight at very first light this morning.

I'm very sorry John, our four-footed creatures ask so little and give back so much. Yours sounds like a good, and loving family. Your horse was very lucky to be a part of it.

Sorry to hear this, John. Animals take up a lot of our heart-space and leave an emptiness when they die. Thinking of you all.
