My current boat is one of these. Can’t wait to get back out next season. I did not do near enough fishing this year. Any of you into canoeing or kayaking?

I want a pair of those for my wife and I. We tried it about 26 years ago and loved it, but never went back. This year at the Vet camp out I attended they had kayaking. LOVED it. Surprisingly even though I am ridiculously out of shape I did ok for the couple of hours I was on the water. I'm not shooting any rapids, but a day at the lake would be fun!

After a couple shoulder surgeries, I am not one to take up kayaking.
I would still go for an outfitted rafting trip through the grand canyon…. Heck, maybe a pipe club adventure.

I have a two person boat. It is a hybrid of Canoe and Kayak. Seats like a Kayak but paddles like a canoe. Sadly, In the 25 years I have been here, never used it. No one to go with. Last tine in the water was offshore in North Carolina back around 2002. My neighbors who raft on the Rio Grande every Spring do not want me with them. That they they made very clear.

Sounds like a cool boat! That's pretty harsh of the neighbors... is it them thinking your boat is unsuited to the river? Or are they just offended by pipe smoke? 😂 (In which case eff 'em haha. )

I've never owned either, but I have happy memories of going out on Walden Pond with my cousins' canoe. In later years I'd often rent a canoe and paddle down the Ipswich River to spend a quiet day. Rafting down the Saco River was always a blast, but that was with a guide (on a raft, obv), so a different type of experience.
I did try an ocean kayak once. By the time I learned to right myself, my lesson was over. Oh, well.
Those days are behind me, sadly. I'm spitting distance from the Ohio, but that looks like the Cuyahoga or Boston Hahbah before cleanup. Yuck. No temptation there.

Learned on one like this, would go in the marsh and grab frogs for .50cents a frog, good money back then.

We went with Sea Eagle in both Class 5 raft and Kayak. Our last journey was a 5-day trip through the Mazatzal Wilderness which has zero signs of civilization until the very end. Overdue for another trip but it's always dependent upon the Spring melt-off here in the desert.

We have four kayaks. A 14.5’ Wilderness Tsunami, a 14.5’ Old Town Cayuga, a 12.5’ Old Town Loon and a 10’ Old Town Vapor. My 10 footer is my go to fishing rig, because of how easy it is to haul and it is very maneuverable on the water. The 12.5 Loon is the roomiest and most comfortable. Both 14.5 ft boats can haul several days of gear and supplies and are pretty fast on the water. They are more capable of handling open water and rougher conditions than the other two. I could overnight or do a couple of days out of the Loon, but definitely not the 10’. They all have their niche. Kayaking in all forms is very popular out here.

Much canoe activity. Always fun.

In about 1982, the construction company that I worked for set us up on a rafting trip on the South Fork of the American river, which is class III in some areas. We went in the early spring so it was running pretty good, with plenty of half submerged rocks to raise the blood pressure.
In about 2010, I rented a kayak and paddled through the majestic area at the south end of lake Powell near Antelope Canyon.
I concluded that I prefer water that transports me as opposed to shoulders that transport me...I don't mind doing my part down a river on backpaddling, etc...too old to learn how to do the kayak roll and strap a helmet on. Don't want to buy the craft rarely used.
So an outfitter with provided lunches and a few beers in the middle of the day, and class III with maybe a IV thrown in would suit me fine.
I don't need "Hey Bubba Hold my Beer" experiences at this stage of life going off a waterfall.
One thing I learned in 1982, was insulated fiber boots were pure gold in icy waters...the company that I worked for did a lot of marine construction, and someone decided to provide them...greatly appreciated in rafts we constantly bailed icy water out of.

The kayak roll would only be necessary to learn for river kayaking and probably ocean kayaking too. Lake kayaking is a very calm activity. The boats used are generally quite a bit longer than river running kayaks. Those are usually quite short, you are skirted in and need the skill of righting yourself, because you will roll. Recreational flatwater boats are mostly 10’ long or more. They are very stable and most have very large cockpits compared to a whitewater kayak. I have paddled for several years now and have come to realize that rolling my boat would be an extremely unlikely event. I have yet to see any kayaker roll their boat under flat water conditions. The only people I ever see in the water are paddle boarders, and only rarely. I used to canoe and managed to never swamp or flip one of those either. It is pretty easy to do in a canoe because of all the room you have to move around in and quickly become unbalanced. When you are seated in a kayak, your center of gravity is pretty low. Half your weight(your legs) are below the waterline. The biggest risk is getting too far out in high wind and bad weather. You have to pay attention to that. Even so, we have never put ourselves in a situation where we were at risk of taking on water or not being able to make it to shore. I have had my large kayak out in pretty high wind and chop in the 3-4’ range. You don’t take on water at all, but do get spray in the face occasionally and it can be chilly. We pay close attention to weather conditions. Lighting worries me more than being out of my boat.

And my shoulders just aren’t fit for propulsion on a kayak for lakes, or any other boat.
Yeah, I was with my brother in law on either lake Cheney or Eldorado lake in Kansas. He was a tournament bass fisherman and never wanted to leave the water. A storm started brewing, and he said “just 15 minutes more”.
Just then all the hair on my body stood up and he said “hit the deck!” A lightning bolt hit a power pole close to us.
After that we hauled a$$ across the lake to get back to shore.
I think that cured him of that.

All true what Don wrote.
My ocean kayak is long enough to go through ocean swells and waves. Wind is an issue and I would go out to sea only when the winds were blowing onto the shore, more or less. Never with wind out to sea.
It works well on lakes and lazy rivers. Not for white water as it is too long.

I will have to switch to one eventually, as I have a damaged labrum in my left shoulder that may force me to change. Hoping I have another decade of paddling.

I can't sit in a canoe. I find it very hard to sit with my legs stretched out in front of me. I'd love to do it though.

When I was canoeing I was usually on my knees with my butt rested against the thwart. Canoes are for lakes and still rivers. Rubber rafts are for rapids. I still think about getting a canoe with a square stern and a 2 5 hp outboard, for exploring Caddo Lake. When I was 18 my buddy and I pulled a water skier with a rowboat. That ain't me anymore.

The kayaks I've found all seat one person. Deal breaker. A canoe will hold both of us. I can get a good used pontoon boat locally for the cost of the electric Kayak.

Yes I have, but the one I was in did not have adjustable seats, and it was more uncomfortable than shoulder rowing.
