Anybody know anything about these critters? I bought a bag of 50 steel mesh screens from Amazon. Scotte’s. Used two of them in my Pete House. (I’ll describe the smoking experience later—it was quite pleasant). But when I finished the bowl and tried to inspect the screens, they weren’t there! Nothing. Are these things supposed to “self destruct” during the smoke? Is a puzzlement. I can’t find a way to contact Scotte’s save for a postal address in Tucson. Help? i.postimg.cc/y8Q0yrs4/F7-E78146-B55-C-4028-9416-361-BBFE34666.jpg

Go to a local smoke shop (head shop) and buy flat brass screens, as you push them brass screens down, they will mold to your bowl and last better than whatever this silver screen composition is. My old meerschaum pipe from the 1800's, created quite a problem for me. As you can see from the side profile of the pipe, things were a bit different back in the day on drilling.(there is a deep septic tank from the three drill holes to the throat of the French Zoave soldier). When I received the pipe, I had to exercise the 130 ghosts of Christmas past with a lighter and careful use of Everclear. After the all clear was called by me, I got the brass screens, and mister Beardsley has been fine, and the screen life is pretty good.

I've used the brass ones in some cobs and a couple of estates that the draft holes were burned out of. Never had one dissappear on me.

That's very concerning if you possibly smoked up the metal screen. I'd not use another one of those things.

Very strange indeed, metal screens should not disappear.

That was a practice of placing a drilled coin, often a sixpence, in the bottom of the chamber to trap moisture to aid in coloring. I've found coins as well as silver buttons. I use sterling silver washers.

Prove it. These were sold specifically for tobacco pipes.

Throw a dime in your pipe, if you smoke that one up you’re worth more!,

Prove it. These were sold specifically for tobacco pipes. Don't have to. Those were being sold in head shops for years prior to appearing on pipe sites just like tobacco sites promoting those pocket jars are just rebranded stash jars. Even Missouri Meerschaum has a line of pipes for that now and "recreational" smoking youtubers are showing off their commissioned briar and meerschaum pipes. Lots of smokers using higher grade pipes now and not just for tobacco.

Tell me specifically what makes them unsuitable for use in tobacco pipes (as recently mentioned at Smokingpipes). To quote Cicero, “Qui absolutum edictum facit, stultus esse potest.“

Those things were sold with metal pipes in headshops and cigarette stores claiming "for tobacco use only". If you wish to use weed pipe accessories for your pipes, far be it from me to stop you as many use grinders on coarse cuts of tobacco.

You obviously have nothing useful to carry the conversation forward. Conversations with the logic-challenged are a waste of time. I am done with you. But thanks for playing.

Is it possible that the screen got tossed out without you noticing? Can you take one of those same screens and directly apply a strong flame to it for an extended time? Will it disintegrate or degrade in strength? I've used a variety of screen materials for years from many different sources and never had one disappear or disintegrate.

I think you hit the nail right on its haid. No other explanation makes sense. I tried to destroy a screen with Zippo, match, and butane torch. No luck. It turned bright red but then when it cooled, no damage. Did the same to a second one. I can only think my “scientific method” testing them in a pipe was deeply flawed. My bad!

I think Duane was on to something with the button in my pipe regardless of what I was told before.
The article on where Simon says he used a corkscrew…I could see chancing that on some pipes, but he says at some point consult a pro, and he recommends briarville.
I worked on cleaning it today, and although it appears original, with that many years of it sitting there, attempting to remove it myself would be foolhardy. I sent picks off to briarville to get their opinion on having them remove it if they conclude the same.
It smokes great for many bowls, but when it is time to clean it, it is a pain. If they can remove it in whole, that would be ideal to be able to take it in and out in the periodic cleanings.
I doubt that is an option.

Things were looking up when we moved here in 2020. I don't know what happened. 2020 happened. Civility and socializing are going to take decades to recover.

If anyone has Simon’s email address and would like to PM it to me that would be great.
It seems the one I have on file is an old one, and I am banned from PM.

I'd wear that as a badge of honor. That place has gone to hell. My banning and that of several others are the reason for this website, it was a day of expungement for silly, paranoid reasons. It is all good though, from time to time internet searches yield valuable results, and landing here was a great place to land.

I use these in many of my pipes. They are made out of meerschaum. I use them primarily because they improve the airflow and I never get the situation of tobacco getting in the draft hole and clogging the pipe when I’m smoking.
