They both seem like worthy projects. I’m looking forward to seeing the finished results. The stummel of the Stanwell doesn't need much, just a good cleaning. The Grabow will be a little more work. The biggest job will be patching the hole in the Stanwell's stem. I am quite interested in seeing the patch job to the stem. I know how to fix that on an amber stem but I’ve never seen it done on one of these.

I use black, medium CA glue, applied in a couple steps. How do you repair amber?

I use black, medium CA glue, applied in a couple steps. How do you repair amber? Depends on the damage. Holes 1mm or smaller along with cracks/fissures I have treated the entire stem with Opticon 224, an epoxy compound used to treat and fill emeralds most commonly. If there is a piece missing, I have used epoxy 330, also a jewelers epoxy made by the same company that makes Opticon for filling cavities. I haven’t needed to fix any to that level in a while fortunately. I have damaged a few in the past. I generally stay away from pipes that have damaged amber stems anymore unless it’s something really special.

Got a few more estates pipes, from a variety of sources, over the last few weeks. I think they just need a salt/Everclear treatment (except for the meerschaum bulldog). There are 3 Grabows, a Mastercraft, a Kaywoodie and a couple no-names.

Different shape, but it reminds me of Lee Van Cleef from “A Few Dollars More”.

I wonder what Stanwell calls that shape. It's a Dublin shape with pot proportions, like the Sav 316. I don't think Sav calls theirs anything except a "316". I know Stanwell uses numbers, too. Just wondering if they also describe it as one of the standard shapes.

SP calls this shape a Dublin in similar Danish estate pipes. Perhaps the most overused, misapplied shape name out there. I'll call it an 86.

I recently picked up a Dr. Grabow Viscount Continental shape #25. It was in really good shape. All I did was give it the salt/Everclear treatment and a buff and polish. I've been looking for this shape for some time.

Also, for quick reshine and leaning (versus the deep clean which could damage the stain) i have found this to work well (as well as just for general home cleaning, a little goes a long way!)

Yesterday, in The Daily Chronicle, I mentioned that I was restemming a pipe. Its one of my brother-in-law's. A BIG Hercules Canadian. I think it came to him with a stem that was already damaged. The tenon ended up breaking off completely after he took possession. I had a couple Canadian stem blanks on hand and decided to give it a try.

He must not be a clencher. Either that or he's got very good teeth.

Well another year down the drain.. a final bowl of 15 Phantom from C&D in a GBD Tapestry 9438... think I may be contemplating what resolutions I won’t keep in the coming year... maybe not... A large sweet tea alongside... EDIT - I cant seem to pay attention to the correct thread to post in either...

As mentioned in the mail thread, I received these three pipes from Herb, Goldbrick . The top two are in very nice shape and only need cleaning, polishing and bowl treatment. The bottom one is interesting. It was a pipe that Herb's friend, Larry, started. In frustration, or loss of interest, he passed it on to Herb to complete. It a big chunk of briar, so it got me thinking there might be a pipe in all that briar. So, I decided to replace the stem and thin the shank to get rid of that "pinch". Then, I started on the bowl. After a lot of sanding and filing, I ended up with this: After more sanding, polishing and buffing (I left the stummel unstained), this is what I ended up with: I see in the photo that I have a little work to do on the stem where it meets the shank. I think i need to remove a little more material from the bottom of the bowl. Thanks for looking!

Big improvement!
I agree with both things you mentioned. Is there a bit of a swell, still, about 1/4" on either side of the shank-stem joint, or is that just the light messing with me?
