A crack is developing in my Pete Pub. What’s up with that?

More than likely a flaw in the briar that is showing its ugly head after a few heat-cool cycles.

My thoughts, too.

Hopefully it just keeps on smoking for you without any characteristic issues.

If you haven’t had it very long, I would contact the retailer.

It's a Peterson. If it cracks it doesn't matter how old it is.

Here is their first reply… “ Good morning! I am sorry for the issue with that product! We can definitely get that taken care of! I will be issuing you a return label to your email, so that we can get it back. Once you have dropped it off, please let me know and I can either refund the item or find you a replacement. I apologize for the inconvenience! Thank you for your business!” I told them I was really fond of this pipe and they replied… “ I completely understand, I am sorry for the inconvenience. Hopefully we have another that you will love just as much ” So far so good. I will keep everyone posted.

Resolution of my problem…
Gianluigi (great Irish name!) told me I had an “unsmokeable pipe” but would do nothing. Here is his second bilet doux to me…
Hi J.R. in my humble opinion nothing its really obvious with briar pipes, and the rusticated sometime are more fragile than the smooth ones, sometime its the habit to packing the same
amount of tobacco, sometime as you think it is a flaw deep in the briar, sometime even many months before was an overeating smoke out door or just a a little tap to empty it apparently without consequences which, however, are revealed over time.
I'm sorry you don't trust us for this, I've been smoking for thirty-five years and I still wonder how it is possible to burn tobacco and therefore combine fire with wood, it's an amazing natural thing.
Sometimes after several years certain things happen, but I don't think it's anyone's fault. I hope I can help you better and again next time.
Thank you for understand and for your kind patience.
Kindest regards
Gianluigi
But Tobaccopipes put a replacement in the mail to me this morning. SIc transit gloria, Peterson.

Good for them. Shame on Peterson. I wonder if he's making the decisions or that was policy.

That is the type of response I would expect from a sober Irishman.

That’s a thoroughly disappointing outcome from Peterson. I was imagining this response if this happened when you bought a new car: Oh, the car you bought from us cracked in half? Well sometimes steel has weaknesses that aren’t obvious at first, but it probably showed up because you decided to actually drive it, so we can’t help you with that. We’ve been building cars for over a hundred years and I’m still amazed that there are small explosions in the engine and yet the whole car doesn’t blow up.

I thought that my chain was getting yanked, hard to imagine getting that response.

Though disappointing, I'm not surprised by Peterson's reply.
That being said, I'm also not surprised by the folks working for Smoking Pipes doing the right thing.
Having had a chance to tour their facility and meeting Sykes, a few years ago, I have nothing but good things to say about the entire organization.
Upon entering the facility we were asked what our cigar of choice was. They promptly presented said cigars, clipped them and lit them for us. We then proceeded to tour the entire facility and meet the staff, all while enjoying our cigars. Gotta love that.
We were then invited to drive over to their Cornell & Diel facility and were given a tour of that entire facility as well, sans the cigars, no smoking allowed in there.
They have subsequently become my online pipe and tobacco vendor of choice.
