I check in once and awhile,,,,just waiting for threads that I can add to without derailing. Thread derailing is the most popular sport around here. Personally, I've never liked forums that police their threads for off-topic posts and start harrumphing at you. People are people. Conversation goes where it goes. There's nothing wrong with things going jokey or tangential for a bit. They'll come back around to the original topic soon enough.

Ron hunted me down on Facebook. That is where I spend most of my time. The past few months we've been struggling with my Mom's health. She developed severe vertigo one morning and had to be taken to the ER. They could not determine the problem and could not do much for it. After a month and a half she seemed to develop Parkinson's symptoms overnight and was going downhill quickly, unable to get out of bed or do anything without help. Took her back to ER, they ran some tests and said "we can't find anything, go home until you can't get out of bed and then come back." There were specialists her doctor suggested but no appointments had been forth coming. My brother called the neurologist and forcefully suggested she needed to be seen right away. She saw him within a week, he prescribed physical therapy and a medication. Within a week she began improving and now she is basically back to normal and the vertigo is gone. But being primary caregiver left me with little time, or desire, for social activities.
Nice to see y'all.

Good news, hope she continues to improve. The golden years, sigh. Thank you. Indeed. Other than breaking her hip in 2019 she's never had health issues. It was challenging for everyone.

I tell you. I kind of like the way it is now. It is like back when I grew up. My dad would light a pipe and do stuff. He didn't yammer on about the little details of smoking pipe.
So many activity based web sites and forums, pipe sites and others too, become discussions about tracking your activity and comparing stats with each other. I like pipe content, sure, and tobacco content, and I like hanging out talking with y'all as I light up. I don't like or want an app to keep track of my tobacco, or my smoking, and then sharing what the app totalizes. How many pipes you smoke, how much tobacco you store, how you keep track of how much tobacco you store, how many books you own, how many of them are not yet read (TBR = to be read) and how many are DNF (did not finish) how much coffee you buy, store, brew, drink, ayyyyyyyyyy.
Apps are good at keeping track of things and counting things and numbers. A lot of sites get into this, especially among young members with no history. I smoke to get that stuff out of my head. How many pipes do I have? How much do I smoke? How much tobacco do I have stored up? And the worst: how do I keep track of it.

I don’t want a medal, been donating 10$ a month here for a while, I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t believe this is a unique place, you can hear so much, how do I pack a pipe, is my pipe drilled off center, etc, etc, sure it’s a pipe forum, but the men and ladies need a shelter from the crap this new modern world is throwing at them. Hell it isn’t even safe to go to Walmart anymore. I love the place and people. Sa la ploce! This is the place, I Garronte!

How many pipes do I have? How much do I smoke? How much tobacco do I have stored up? And the worst: how do I keep track of it. Amen ! Years back on another site , a young / new pipe smoker was complaining that the "old" farmer type pipers would greet and converse with him at the local coffee stop. Just because you smoke a pipe doesn't make you family or friend. I ended up in a three hour discussion that included some complimentary libations and a cpl REALLY good cigars simply by stopping to answer a question . (No I won't share that question) But that is the exception, not the rule. There is more going on than smoking a pipe or shooting a gun. Lets discuss the weather, the new cars coming out, the old cars we miss. I don't want to keep track of anything on my phone, I would like the Durn thing to actually make a call once in awhile. He!!, most the time mine is just a paperweight. Lost it for a week, Then the boss made me find it so she could give a shopping list.

Mom came down with Meniere's Disease, which is an inner ear disorder, quite a few years ago, now. She never knew when it was going to hit, and when it did hit, she was so dizzy she had to crawl to the toilet to throw up, and she had to hang on to it in order to hit it. Just absolute misery. We take for granted our sense of balance. When it goes, though, we come to a grinding halt. My best to your mom. Hope she stays on the uptick.

I like to consider all the pipe forums should be like a smoking lounge. Within a lounge, you have guys talking about guns, beers, weather, cooking and whatever crosses their mind. Urb said it well about policing on topic. If anything just create forums and various threads for all the topics but I like it when the main active threads veer off a bit and people can feel free to chat. I'll say it again here, welcome back Lady Margaret

Glad to see you again… I was looking through an old thread and saw a post of yours, and missed you.
