As some of you here know, I've been enjoying pipes for decades, definitely more the last 10 years than the previous 30, but enjoyin pipes and baccy nonetheless.
Having acquired a modest cellar, over the last 6 or so years, I have been hesitant to try the tins of Royal Yacht I have on the shelves, based off of the mixed reviews and outright loathing of this blend.
Today, after finishing off a tin of Cabbies Mixture, I glanced over the shelves and decided to give it a whirl.
Gotta tell all you haters, I Really Really enjoy this blend.
Don't know if it'll ever be an all day smoke, but it's definitely on that I'll put in the rotation.
cheers

I’ve enjoyed Royal Yacht for many years. It’s good stuff and I have a jar of it sitting next to me as I type this. I do wish it was as strong in nic as many negative reviews claim it to be though.

The first time I smoked it, I felt like I was smoking tire rubber. Tried it a few years later, and it was much more palatable! It is pipestud favorite blend I believe.

It’s not something I reach for often but it’s a good one.

I remember it was just OK, but I think I would like it more now.

I really enjoyed the tin of the Royal Yacht that I smoked through probably two years ago now. It was sweet, grassy and citrusy. Very delicious when sipped. In my opinion anyway. I have only one tin left. I didn't buy any after they changed companies (again) so it will be a few years before I revisit the blend.

I cannot remember who blends what in the changeover, but on a Pipesmagazine podcast after the Dunhill blends went the Peterson route, the current head honcho was asked about people complaining that the blends would be different he replied. Even if they wanted to change the blends (which they did not want to), they were hog tied by the deeming rules, they could not change the recipe, one iota. But of course, sourcing the same leaf can change from one manufacturer to the next I suppose.

If it's anywhere close in taste I am sure I will like it. I am getting to the point where some of my cellar has some good age on it so I need to start popping some of my cellar tins instead of purchasing more tobacco, but you know how that goes.

I can’t tell any difference at all between the Dunhill labeled version and the Peterson labeled. When I smoked my last Dunhill tin and opened a Peterson tin it was identical.

This is one of those tins I haven't cracked open, yet. The tins sure are pretty, though!

From first light I've always enjoyed RY. Never found it to be a strong blend. For me it has a flavor-edge that is unique but hardly overbearing. I can imagine while smoking it the rubber tire taste interpretation others have expressed. But however that flavor expresses itself on my palette I don't find it objectionable in the least, and in fact find that particular aspect of the RY flavor profile a welcomed addition. RY always cellared and at arm's reach. Love it!

I like Royal Yacht alright, and I suspect I'll like it quite a bit more the next time I pop open a tin. I've only got one tin of Dunhill's branded Royal Yacht from about 2015 in the cellar at the moment. As far as changes, as mentioned, the blends did not change at all when switching to Peterson. As far as deeming rules go, they are irrelevant and there have been over 100 entirely new blends introduced since the threat of them came about something like seven years ago now at this point. I'm sure 10 more new pipe tobacco blends will roll out yet this year in 2023. Ain't nobody got no time or care for the deeming rules any more.

Yep! I keep some of this on hand all the time. It's been a while since I cracked one open though.

I also feel that we are on borrowed time. I can imagine that they are pumping out new blends to sell to hoarders and in order to get rid of anything on hand that they won't be able to use later. What could happen is that the Chinese and German markets stay buoyant enough to justify creating new blends.

I’m personally worried more about tax increases then the deeming regs. Stack it deep and stack it cheap like they say.
